"Welcome to Canada! We're a good lot, I swear"

May 28, 2008 21:41

Greetings all! :)  I hail to you from the great land known as Canada.

LOL, but most of you already knew that.

Trip's going well so far.  Let's recap so far....

Friday/Saturday: Pack up the car and head up to Modesto.  Get some last minute things and then pack up the rest of the stuff in the car.  Go to dinner with his family and my family, then we get some gas so that way the car is full.  It's about 9pm and we decide to just hit the road instead of waiting until like 3am (as originally planned).  Matt reasons that he prefers driving at night and he's super awake now anyways...so might as well head off.  So I was like... ok.  So we headed off...get a bit down the road and turn back because he forgot something... then we were officially on the road again at 9:40.  I fall asleep because hey... it's dark out and i'm tired, lol.  We eventually make it up to Redding area, then keep on going into Oregon and stop at Ashland to take a nap... a nice 3 hour nap in the parking lot of a hotel, lol.  Woke up and it was freezing, lol, so then we kept on going.  Went for about an hour and then Matt needed to sleep some more and I had basically been sleeping majority of the trip anyway, so then I continue driving and we eventually get to Salem.  Yay! Back in Salem...so weird.... get settled into the hotel and take a nice long nap, get up and get ready for dinner, head over to Applebee's and meet up with a good sized group of people (yay!).  It was good to see people again and have fun out with a group of friends. :)  Got my stuff back from Rachel and then we went to Kelsey's house to play with the puppy and visit longer.  Then went to bed to prepare for another day of driving and crossing-border-ness.

Sunday: Head on up toward Canada.  We stop by Red Robin in Seattle to have lunch and see Kim, that was pretty fun. :) It was a super nice day and had the parking been cheaper, we probably would've stayed for a bit longer to walk around and see Seattle a bit more...hopefully we have the chance to do that sometime in our time in WA again on this trip.  Then we head up to the border...and so we hit it and of course, we hand them our ID's (my passport and his ID and birth certificate) and then they ask us the usual questions "what are you doing, etc." and mark us and send us over to the quarantine area.  Like wtf?  So we head on in and they take the keys in case they want to search the car and ask a few questions like "so you've lived in CA your whole life?" and things like that...then they leave and we sit down...they ask us some more questions...then we wait.....then the guy comes out and asks "Amanda... you were fingerprinted, why?" And I say - sorta holding back a laugh because it's a smidge ridiculous - "it was for the church to work with the bible school" and the guy goes "ok, here ya go" and gives us the keys and the go ahead.  Oh Canada...how ridiculous you are.  We continue to follow our mapquest directions to the hotel and we end up in a residential area and are lost....ask a lady at the 7/11 and she's no help, so we follow directions out of the AAA book for the area and eventually find the hotel.  The lady at the front desk is super friendly and she goes "you used mapquest, didn't you?" lol, and we're like "yeah"...apparently they've been trying to have them change that, lol.  So we get into our room, head to the store to buy some things for the week, make some dinner, then head to bed.

Monday: First official day of work.  We are split up with another couple so we can be "trained".  And as we're making the tents and tickets for the day I discover a fun little fact about one of my co-workers.... she was on Survivor Cook Islands... like for serious, one of the contestants...and I was like "I knew you kinda looked familiar...." but didn't say it because that'd be awkward :-P  So yeah, spending the day with her was fun because we got to talk about tons of stuff and a little about Survivor, which is cool.  Like how awesome is that? She like knows Ozzy and is friends with him and some other Survivor people still...and now I know her and hang out with her and work with her...so now it's like I'm that much closer to famous people.  But anyways... work was really fun.  The day went by super fast and it was fun to go in and talk to people and see the area.  Then when we got back and Matt and I headed over to Vancouver to see the city and whatnot...the buildings are really cool.  And the mountains in the area are really pretty...I am totally taking pictures tomorrow...i will not forget my camera again. :-P  We took the cute little aquabus over to the little island and walked around, then we basically headed back to our hotel and watched TV and went to sleep.

Tuesday: Second official day of work.  Matt and I get to work together on our own. :-D  We head to a new town to cover and do pretty well... hitting up tons of places and getting a lot of good "yes's" from people.  We are exhausted after working hard so we get back and take a nap...well....I take a nap, Matt couldn't sleep so he was pretty productive while I napped, lol.  We got Taco Bell for dinner....which we probably won't do again here because 1. it's too expensive because Canada is weird, and 2. it wasn't good either.  We watched Vantage Point which was pretty good actually, then fell asleep. :)

Wednesday: Third official day of work.  Went to a town next to the one we did on Tuesday and hit up all of our area pretty well, and got done early-ish.  At one of the places we stopped at on our route a guy looked at my license plate and looked at me with a big ol' smile saying "Welcome to Canada! We're a good lot, I swear" haha, it was quite precious and I just smiled and we chatted for a bit.  So that was fun. :-P I went into the visitor's center and looked at the postcards and saw one with a waterfall on it and go "oo, that's pretty, where's that?" and she shows us on the map and how to get there...so we head on over there to check it out.  It looked closed for the day, but we tried to look at it anyway... we saw the little pooling area first, then saw the major climb up the stairs toward the fall and go "we'll do that climb another day..." lol, the job initself is exhausting...so we weren't prepared to climb anything.  Came back, ordered pizza (which is good pizza, and makes for good leftovers) then watched Mad Money, which is a pretty cute movie. :)  Then I got on here to update about life and whatnot.

It's like just after 10 and i'm kinda tired.  It's so weird.... I feel like a non-social-person because I haven't gone out with the people at all because A.) i'm usually pretty tired at the end of the day, and B.) i don't have money yet to do so.  I figure...hey...there's always time later to do that. :-P

We'll be here in Langley, BC until Friday...then we're going to another spot here in Canada (I forget where exactly).  Then we'll be heading to Washington (where, I don't know yet) the following weekend, and spend 2 weeks in Washington, then back up to Canada for 2 months!  So yeah...I guess I gotta get used to this Canadian living. :-P

Well, I think that's enough update for now.  I'm sure there'll be more to come. :-D

So far.... it's really fun.  :)  Looking forward to all the fun adventures ahead.
