Sony has opened "Progression servers." This is their spin-doctored version of saying "Retro server." Here, everyone must start a character from scratch, and develop in the limited world EverQuest was in its infancy - just the few starting continents and their content, where a L50 character was super.
No Ruins of Kunark, no Plane of Knowledge, none of the nicities that evolved over the years since EQ's inception.
No, the brainiacs at SOE thought, let's make the players effort (in terms of raids and server events) to open up content the other servers provide. Let's make them struggle to add Ruins of Kunark back to the game, have Shards of Velious be a challenge that comes after that, and so on. They'll spend YEARS trying to make this server as rich in content as the older ones...
...that is, if anyone cares.
What popularity are the Progression servers enjoying? I dunno. I am not even convinced I want to start a character, knowing from what limited choices of race and class I have to choose from; knowing what overcrowded, overcamped spots to gain experience will be available. Gnome Necromancer, or Halfling Druid? I played those before, and got way too tired with their xp treadmill. Not having a Field of Bone, Kurn's Tower, et al., in game just means it's going to be that much more tedious and boring. No thank you.
SOE has re-activated accounts for 30 days. I may log into Zoransis, the Iksar Beastlord and see who I can hook up with from days gone by, and see what content I can enjoy solo (if any).
