I especially love her no-nonsense tone at the end when she figures out what he needs to deal with the situation.
'No, honestly Lestrade, he NEEDS me to be a blunt, stern figure. If I try nice he just folds up and sobs!'
Sally's such an interesting character, I always like her to get some page-time.

Sherlock is a strange creature when it come to emotions. He doesn't like being vulnerable, not with John, not with Mycroft, not at all. Sincerity is not something he copes with well. That said, I didn't want to let him off the hook for being a deliberate arsehole, hence the "stop being a prick" bit. XD

Fanon is more lenient than canon. In canon John doesn't let Sherlock get away with things. Particularly in TBB and TGG, he gets very upset by Sherlock being tactless and unfeeling.
I think Sherlock will end up becoming more heroic. At the moment he's much less likeable than his ACD!Canon counterpart, who was arrogant but also charming, and more aware of his flaws. I LOVE the BBC interpretation of the character, though. He's awesome and dreadful at the same time. And there's so much space for development, which is what you want. A perfectly-formed Holmes is great, but a formative hero who's not naturally inclined that way is AWESOME.

I suppose the difference between people's reaction to him in canon and in the fandom is that he gets to insult Lestrade et all and still work with them because they need him, whereas he gets to be rude and we still like him because he's funny and interesting and sympathetic. My favourite parts of the series are when he and John are fighting over what is and isn't acceptable, because I love when he is challenged like that. I definitely see him growing more as a character over time. Comparatively, he's much younger than we usually see Holmes and I don't think he's quite settled yet. John is very good for him, in that respect, I think.
Basically, I agree with you. Flawed characters are great, character development is great. XD
