So it's day 1 of the lady love fest! I've got three ladies
- Susan Pevensie (Narnia)
- Cassandra Cain (DC)
- Artemis Crock (Young Justice)
I figured Day 1 I would just talk a little bit about each of these amazing ladies and why I love them so much. I also have a plan to each day have a fourth segment where I do one little thing about a lady I didn't claim but who tends to be treated poorly in fandom.
Also, I'm open to requests/suggestions/prompts for picspams, short (VERY short) fics, questions you'd like me to answer about those three ladies, etc.
That having been said, on to Day 1!
Susan Pevensie
Okay, so odds are if you've know me for, say, longer than a week, you know that I passionately love Susan and really really identify with her. I've talked about her so much that I honestly don't know how much I have left to say, but I'm pretty sure I can come up with something because I've never not been able to talk about her.
Susan Pevensie is a consummate older sister. She's practical, rational, believes in things she can see, and wants to keep her siblings safe and happy. She's a protector, first and foremost, for everyone, and she's willing to sacrifice a lot to keep the people she loves safe. The person we're shown in canon is perhaps not as adventurous or as easy to get along with as her siblings, but she is an intelligent and brave girl who is forced into a life she never chose and takes to it not only with grace but with utter triumph, and then when she is forced out of the life she'd come to love back into her old one, takes that with the same grace and dignity as she had in Narnia.
She's strong. She's loving. She's clever. She's a well-loved sister.
She is not a traitor. She is someone who chose to move on when that was the only option presented to her.
Out of my many fics about her, I'd say probably
lovely in my sight is the one that comes closest to expressing what I feel about her narrative.
Cassandra Cain
Oh man guys, Cassandra Cain was my gateway drug into comics and I adore her for it. CASS. Guys, Cassandra's storyline throughout her series was a beautiful, beautiful one.
This is a girl who is literally all about redemption and hope. She believes in people's ability to change because she has to, because if she doesn't believe in it then where does that leave her? Cassandra was raised by assassins to be an assassin. No, not an assassin. To be a weapon, a voiceless one that had no thoughts of its own. Cain was proud of her and theoretically even fond, yes, but fond of her in a destructive and abusive way that did nothing but harm her.
It's been so engrained in her that Cassandra genuinely believed she was useless without her ability to fight. She chose a year of having her abilities and then a fight to the death against Shiva (SHIVA, guys) rather than losing them. She felt so much guilt over having killed a man that she was reckless to great extremes and held a death wish for years over it.
Cassandra wants to help everyone. She wants people to change and grow and become better like she has. She's an amazing friend and a fantastic hero and I love her so, so much.
Artemis Crock
Unfortunately, there isn't that much I can say about this fine lady! Her canon only has 10 episodes so far and she's only been in four of them. She's also got a two-part origin story in the attached canon comic, of which Part 1 is out and is excellent.
But Betsy, you may say. If she has been around so little, surely she has not received hate?
Haha, I would reply, then you do not know the ways of fandom.
I really like what little we've seen of Artemis. She's got an enormous amount of willpower, she's exceptionally brave, she's going against a family history of crime, and she stands up for herself. Of the team she's just joined, most of them seem to be polite but distant while one actively dislikes her and is quite clear about it. But despite her history, her mom's recent crippling and stint in jail, the pressure she's under simply as a young superhero, much less one on a team that she's not been warmly welcomed into, she's still proud, strong, feisty, and eager to help and become friends with the team.
Everything I've seen of her so far indicates that she is awesome and destined to become even MORE awesome, and I am really really looking forward to more of her. (OMG ROBIN AND ARTEMIS TEAM UP EPISODE COME TO ME YOU ARE EVERYTHING I WANT OUT OF THIS SHOW.)
