here The King of Guardia had been grudgingly gracious to Crono in his recent visits to the palace. Which only seemed fitting, given the whole saving-the-universe thing. On his last visit, though, the King finally seemed to give up on the idea that his headstrong daughter would tire of this village boy, and laid down the law.
Later that night, lying together atop a hill beyond the palace grounds, Crono recounted the King's rules, doing a sufficiently pompous impression of the King that Marle laughed hysterically after each one.
The first rule is, you are not good enough for my daughter. It's that simple. The Princess Nadia is so high above your station that even to think of marrying her is the boldest sort of presumption. However, she tells me that she is not going to be persuaded to take up with a more suitable suitor, perhaps a nice Prince from the South Kingdom, and so I have a few very simple rules that you must keep in mind.
"I've met that Prince he's talking about. He's a toad. Not a nice froggy like our Glenn, but an actual toad."
Marrying into a royal family is a major commitment that comes with serious obligations. As my sole heir, the Princess Nadia will be the Queen of Guardia. If you marry her, this means you will be King. This is a heavy responsibility that must be treated as such. My Chancellor will be available to offer you lessons on proper comportment and etiquette that you were doubtless denied as a child. If this Chancellor also turns into a giant slug, feel free to kill him.
"How many of these darned Chancellors have turned into slugs now? Three? It's getting tiresome."
You must realize that my daughter is a flower of an ancient royal lineage. She is not to be subjected to hardship and peril. If you wish to marry her, you must know that it is your job to protect her from such things. This, of course, means that there will be no more adventuring through time and space to save the world.
Marle shook her head at this one. "Daddy always seems to forget that I was there during the fight with Lavos. I helped save the world, and he thinks I need to be protected? He never changes.
If you ever float away on a balloon with my daughter again, I will have you thrown into the remotest cell of the highest tower. Understood?
Marle laid her head on Crono's shoulder. "You jumping onto the balloons with me is maybe the sweetest thing I've ever seen. Well, maybe the second. You did travel back in time to save me." She giggled.
Fifth, the Royal Treasury contains priceless heirlooms, belonging to the Kingdom of Guardia and held in trust by the royal family. It does not contain 'loot.'
"But we needed that loot to save the world! Besides, nobody had any use for the silly rainbow shell!"
Finally, the Princess Nadia, my only daughter and heir, must be treated with the respect due her station. I will not allow any... familiarity... to take place. I shall not permit it. This means no midnight... canoodling. You understand?
"What, like this?" Marle asked, kissing Crono before he had a chance to respond.
