exopromptmeme Baekhyun heard the front door open and close. He tore his eyes off the TV and glanced to the big white clock on the wall. It’s almost midnight.
The small figure Baekhyun had been waiting up for walked inside the room. A weak smile appeared on the guy’s face as he noticed Baekhyun. “Hey.”
Baekhyun smiled when Jongdae approached the couch he was sitting on. “Hey.”
“Why are you still up?” Jongdae asked, resting his head on Baekhyun’s thigh and struggled to find a comfortable position in his uncomfortable clothes.
“A certain midget hasn’t come home yet,” Baekhyun answered as he helped Jongdae out of his cardigan.
“Aww, do you miss me that much?” Jongdae finally had his cardigan and shoes off, and he managed to turn Baekhyun’s lap into a decent pillow.
Baekhyun just scoffed in reply. Jongdae probably wouldn't hear him if he answered, anyway; he already had his eyes closed.
They had been best friends for years, and somewhere along the way it just became a habit that every time they have separate schedules, the one who finished early would wait up for the other. They would exchange what-are-you-doing-up or why-aren't-you-asleep-yet as mock courtesy, an excuse to banter and hopefully help with the fatigue.
“Don’t wait up tomorrow,” Jongdae mumbled through his half-asleep state. “I’m off to China.”
“You are?” Baekhyun frowned at his best friend. “Don’t we have that photo shoot in the morning?”
“We do,” Jongdae replied. “My flight is like, an hour after the photo shoot.”
“SM is totally overworking you.”
Jongdae laughed. “I guess. But whatever.”
Within the week, Baekhyun barely saw Jongdae at the dorm. He would be flying to China for interviews, or attending fan signings, or performing with SM the Ballad. Baekhyun, on the other hand, did not really have much on his plate, and he found himself wandering around the internet way too often. He watched Jongdae on interviews, and on his performances, and it felt weird. Weird, because he always thought that his voice and Jongdae’s go really well together, but apparently, Liyin noona also sounded really good with Jongdae. And because apparently, Jongdae looked like he enjoyed himself, unlike those days when he promoted with EXO M and basically sang more often than he talked.
He was waiting for one of Jongdae’s Chinese interview to buffer when his phone buzzed.

Baekhyun laughed and decided not to answer. He turned to his Youtube video and pressed play. Jongdae looks really nice in suits. Baekhyun smiled when the interviewers commented about Jongdae’s Chinese pronunciation; he knew how much Jongdae practiced to perfect that.
Chanyeol walked in halfway through the interview and watched along. “He really seems to enjoy himself, don’t you think?”
“Yeah,” Baekhyun answered, smiling.
“Guess he really does like Liyin noona, huh?”
“Yeah,” Baekhyun replied absentmindedly, eyes still glued to the video. It took him another second to register Chanyeol’s remark. “Wait, what?”
Chanyeol frowned at him. “You don’t know? It’s all over the internet.”
“What is all over the internet?”
“The Chen/Liyin ship,” Chanyeol typed in something on his phone. He gave his phone to Baekhyun after finding what he was looking for.
Baekhyun took Chanyeol’s phone and browsed through the tumblr tag. In any other occasion, his first thought would have been I can’t believe Chanyeol has a tumblr, but apparently that wasn't what came up on his mind. Kim Jongdae and Zhang Liyin. Huh.
“Interesting,” Baekhyun commented.
“I know, right?” Chanyeol exclaimed, obviously on board with the ship. “Jongdae always had a thing for noonas, can’t believe he actually scored one.”
“Can’t wait to make fun of him,” Baekhyun grinned. But why does it feel weird?
It was ten minutes to 11 when Jongdae finally reached the dorm, looking more exhausted than ever. Baekhyun patted his back lightly as the younger boy failed to say anything and hugged him.
“What are you doing up,” Jongdae mumbled. It didn’t even sound like a question.
Baekhyun tried to come up with a string of witty answer like he always did, but couldn’t. All he could think about was the Chen/Liyin stuff he read while waiting for Jongdae to arrive. “I don’t know,” he finally said.
Jongdae looked up in confusion, and pressed the back of his hand to Baekhyun’s forehead. “Are you sick?”
“I’m fine. Why?” Baekhyun grimaced. That came out way more bitter and cold than he intended. What is wrong with you, Byun Baekhyun.
Jongdae frowned at his direction, but finally shook his head. “Nevermind.”
Baekhyun spent days on tumblr (using Chanyeol’s account; don’t judge), browsing the #chenyin tag. He did not know why, but he did it for hours, while Jongdae was busy with his promotions. He had missed at least three days of waiting up for Jongdae, because he just didn’t feel like it. He had no words to say to Jongdae, and he felt somehow mad at the guy.
“Oh my god Jongdae is totally in love with noona <3,” random tumblr comment number one. “Jongdae, your crush is showing,” random tumblr comment number two. “These two are so cute together,” random youtube comment number nineteen. This went on forever.
Looking at Jongdae with Liyin noona still felt weird. He had never seen Jongdae interact that much with a girl before. He knew Jongdae had a thing for noonas, but it never crossed his mind that Jongdae would find one this soon. It was weird because Baekhyun felt irritated. Of all things you could feel when your best friend looked so foolishly in love, he felt irritated. But there he was, looking for more pictures and videos of Jongdae with Liyin noona, feeling more annoyed with each one he found.
They actually look really good together, though, Baekhyun thought. Why am I bothered at all?
“Still browsing for chenyin?” Kyungsoo came up from behind him, and Baekhyun jumped off his chair.
Baekhyun collected himself and sat back down on his chair, and Kyungsoo continued cautiously. “Baek, are you mad at Jongdae?”
“Huh? No, why?” Baekhyun hated that he sounded defensive.
“He asked,” Kyungsoo said. “I found him this morning, asleep in the living room, and we talked a bit.”
“Why was he sleeping in the living room?”
“Said he’s too tired to go to his room,” Kyungsoo shrugged. He then added hesitantly, “But I’m guessing he fell asleep waiting for you.”
Baekhyun felt guilt creeping up. “Oh?”
“Yeah, he told me about your tradition and that you've missed it for a couple of nights now,” Kyungsoo continued. “Then he laughed it off and said it probably wasn't a tradition for you anyway.”
Baekhyun fell silent. It is our tradition. I just don’t want to see you right now.
“Yeah, anyway,” Kyungsoo got up from the bed he’d been sitting on. “Talk to him, will you? He looked like a zombie.”
“Okay,” Baekhyun whispered, and Kyungsoo left the room. But he still didn't want to.
Two days later and Baekhyun still avoided Jongdae at all cost. He ignored Jongdae's phone calls, pretended to sleep when Jongdae came to his room, and replied Jongdae’s text messages with curt remarks that had no potential of becoming decent conversations.
Two days later and Baekhyun found Jongdae sitting on his bed, waiting for him as he just got back from Inkigayo. Shit, can’t pretend to sleep now.
“Hey,” Baekhyun hated that Jongdae beamed at him.
“Hey,” Baekhyun replied briskly. “What’s up?”
“Nothing, just didn't want you to run off to bed if I waited on the couch.”
He knows me well, apparently. “I’m tired though, Jongdae,” Baekhyun said coldly.
“I know, go ahead,” Jongdae stood up from Baekhyun’s bed, and moved to a chair.
Baekhyun threw his backpack under his bed and lay down.
“Baek,” Jongdae called him.
“Hm?”
“Are you mad?”
“No, why do you keep asking that.”
“Because you look mad.”
“Well, I’m not.”
“Are you sure?” Jongdae asked weakly. “Is it because they gave me a part in SM the Ballad? I know you wanted it, too.”
“No, I’m not mad,” Baekhyun answered stubbornly.
“Sorry,” Jongdae whispered.
“I’m not mad, okay?” Baekhyun sat up and raised his voice on Jongdae. “Now would you please let me sleep?!”
Jongdae seemed shocked, and hurt, at Baekhyun’s reaction, and walked out of the room. Baekhyun could see Minseok and Luhan waiting for Jongdae at the door, having run from their bedroom when they heard Baekhyun yell. Jongdae smiled at them and shook his head before giving one last look at Baekhyun, pain in his eyes, and closed the door. Great job Byun Baekhyun, everyone heard you.
“That was uncalled for,” Kyungsoo commented from the adjacent bed. Baekhyun didn’t even realize he was there.
“Whatever,” Baekhyun rolled around and hid under his blanket. But that felt weird, too.
Avoiding Jongdae became a lot easier since then, probably because Jongdae didn’t want to have anything to do with him as well. Baekhyun thought he would feel relieved, but he just felt lonely. Baekhyun had taken to hang out with Chanyeol after his fight with Jongdae. The tall guy doesn't normally meddle the way Kyungsoo does, but it was probably a special case when Baekhyun had not talked to Jongdae for almost a week.
“Hey Baek,” Chanyeol started carefully as he dipped fries on his milkshake. “Why are you mad at Jongdae?”
Baekhyun was about to launch on his i-am-not-mad speech, but he felt too exhausted to fight with another one of his best friend. “I don’t know.”
Chanyeol observed Baekhyun as he bit into his fries, and said slowly, “Could it probably be because you’re jealous?”
Baekhyun sighed. “I’m not jealous, Chanyeol, I’m happy that Jongdae got a part in SM the Ballad,” he said. And he knew he meant it. “I can’t sing in Chinese, anyway.”
“That’s not what I’m talking about,” Chanyeol slurped his milkshake. “I mean maybe you’re jealous that Jongdae is close to Liyin noona.”
Baekhyun’s eyes widened. He never really thought about that, but really it would explain his obsession with chenyin and the irritated feeling he got every time he saw the both of them. But why would he be jealous?
“Maybe,” Chanyeol continued, a grin appearing on his face, “Maybe you liked Jongdae all this time?”
Baekhyun felt his cheeks redden and it didn’t even make sense. He knew he felt comfortable with Jongdae, but crushing on him?
“Just saying,” Chanyeol went back to dipping his fries in milkshake, the grin still plastered on his face. “Maybe.”
Baekhyun wished his face would stop blushing then, but that did not happen.
After the moment of revelation with Chanyeol, Baekhyun started to watch Jongdae’s every move, much to everyone’s displease. See, everyone was on Jongdae’s side in this fight. And of course they are. I’m the idiot, anyway. So when he saw Jongdae snickering at Yifan when the older male was fidgeting with his phone, Baekhyun couldn't help his curiosity.
“Hyung,” Baekhyun approached Yifan after Jongdae was out of sight. “What was that about?”
Yifan looked up, eyeing Baekhyun. “Aren’t you supposed to not care about Jongdae?”
Baekhyun rolled his eyes. “I’m trying to fix things; ergo I need to know everything about him that I can use to blackmail him into forgiving me.”
“Cute plan,” Yifan seemed to be considering telling Baekhyun about whatever business he got with Jongdae, so Baekhyun put up his cutest puppy dog eyes and stared at Yifan until he caved.
Yifan sighed. “He’s enjoying being my matchmaker,” he finally said.
Baekhyun tilted his head, “With?”
“Liyin jie,” Yifan blushed. “Jongdae said she liked me and asked for my number, and we’ve been chatting for a couple of days and we are planning to meet up tomorrow and I was texting her and Jongdae saw and he felt smug for being cupid when in actuality we could have gotten together even without Jongdae’s help but I guess he kind of helped, I don’t know,” he rapped away.
It took Baekhyun a little over three seconds to process the whole contents of Yifan’s answer, but afterwards, he lit up unmistakably. He thanked Yifan quickly and ran to look for Jongdae.
He didn’t find Jongdae that day, but Baekhyun was determined to talk to him after his schedule tonight. He sat on the couch anxiously, waiting for the door to open.
Jongdae arrived a little after 12, and was obviously startled to find Baekhyun waiting for him.
“Why are you still up?” he asked out of habit, but it was cold, and angry, and hurt.
Baekhyun stood up and approached Jongdae. He was confident about facing Jongdae today, but as he took in Jongdae’s angry and tired face, he couldn’t say anything. Instead, he pulled the younger boy into a hug.
“Sorry,” Baekhyun whispered to Jongdae, who was still standing stiffly, not hugging him back. “I was stupid.”
“You were,” Jongdae replied, seemingly too tired to quarrel. He put his hands on Baekhyun’s sides and pulled him away from the hug. Baekhyun thought he was going to leave him then and there, but Jongdae just looked him straight in the eyes. “Why were you mad at me?”
Baekhyun looked down. “Uhm, can we not talk about that?”
“You expect me to forgive you,” Jongdae said, almost amused, “but you won’t tell me why you’re mad?”
“I guess that’s stupid, too,” Baekhyun answered sheepishly.
“It is.”
“So, uhm,” Baekhyun started to blush. “After consulting Chanyeol, apparently I uh..”
“Quickly Baekhyun, come on,” Jongdae cut him impatiently.
“I was jealous with Liyin noona,” Baekhyun finally finished, eyes averted to his shoes.
There was a moment of silence, which Baekhyun couldn’t bear, so he looked up to his best friend, who apparently was stifling a chuckle. When he met Baekhyun’s eyes, Jongdae burst out into a laugh. Baekhyun stared at him, dumbfounded.
“Oh my god you are so cute!” Jongdae managed to say between his laugh, pressing his hands on Baekhyun’s cheeks.
When Baekhyun stayed silent, Jongdae cleared his throat, but a smile was still on his face. “So, does that mean you finally realize your undying love for me?” he grinned smugly.
“Undying love? No,” Baekhyun answered. “Crush, perhaps.”
It didn't matter for Jongdae, apparently, because he still grinned like a fool. “Good enough for me.” He leaned in and gave Baekhyun a peck on the lips.
“What was that?” Baekhyun protested. He didn't realize he expected more, but he did.
“I’m beat,” Jongdae stuck out his tongue. “I had this crush on my best friend who all of a sudden decided to give me the silent treatment for over a week. Apparently because he was jealous with Yifan’s new girlfriend.”
“Let me make it up to you then,” Baekhyun pulled Jongdae by the collar and gave him a long, proper kiss. “I’ll do all the work.”
