This is an interesting
article from Variety on possible changes to the Nielsen ratings.
chanel19 and I were just discussing this yesterday - wondering how network television will have to evolve, as more and more people record to TiVo and DVRs to watch after airing dates. Variety says this:
CBS exec veep-chief research officer Dave Poltrack said that he's burrowed through reams of commercial data embedded deep in the printouts spewed out every day by Nielsen. His finding: About 40% of viewers watching a pre-recorded broadcast program on a digital video recorder are not zapping the 30-second spots but letting them play out to their full length.
and then
Nielsen has called a meeting of its clients for later this month to discuss, among other topics, adding a fourth audience-measurement data stream to the existing three of live, live plus 24 hours and live plus seven days. Wurtzel suggested that live plus two days would be a good addition, helping the industry to figure out exactly how people are using their DVRs.
and of particular interest to - well, me, as:
A: I don't have any television reception at my apartment (mostly because I know I'll watch it if I do - although an amazing cable deal flier arrived Saturday in the mail, so I'm feeling tempted)
B: it mentions the only show that I follow, which I either watch it at a friend's the night of or watch it at a friend's the day after airing:
One egregious example of unfairness to NBC, said Wurtzel, centers on "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip," its highly regarded but low-rated primetime dramedy. An eye-opening 18% of the show's viewers watch an average episode on their DVRs up to a week after its day/date telecast Monday at 10. Advertisers don't pay for those viewers, even though "Studio 60" is at the top of the list of favorites among people who are college educated and earn six-figure incomes.
It seems that something certainly has to change. So, curious -
Not a Poll
A. Do you have a television/television reception?
B: How many hours a week do you watch?
C: What percentage of programs do you estimate that you watch 'not live' (i.e. from TiVo/recording/other means)?
D: Do you skip commercials?
EDIT:
You know, I'm always doing this - asking intrusive questions without responding to them myself. So...
A: As mentioned, no. I do, though, have a large-ish set (well, for me and the size of my apartment; probably not by anyone else's standards) and a great digital surround sound system (it pays to be friends with a technogeek; she unloads her last gen stuff on me when she upgrades).
B: The only program I watch that's currently being aired is Studio 60. If I had reception, I'd probably also be watching Heroes, Lost, and Project Runway. I do, though, have Netflix, and occasionally buy/borrow series on DVD. I'm slowly working my way through Voyager right now (note to crew of Voyager - OMG STOP LETTING STRANGERS ON YOUR SHIP BECAUSE THEY WILL TRY TO KILL YOU IS THAT SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND?!?). Time watched varies - I probably average through the year 1-3 hours a week, although sometimes weeks go by when I don't watch anything (mostly in the summer).
C: Studio 60 is the only one that I try to catch live.
D: Not usually - particularly as they've been getting more entertainly lately.
