Making stuff - a poll

Jul 20, 2006 13:44

I've just started a new painting class, and it has me wondering about being creative - which means, as usual, that it's time to bother you good people.

Regardless of your chosen area of creativity (and I can already see some of you out there smirking; you KNOW what I'm talking about), I'd love to see answers on whichever questions appeal.

1. At the moment it's knitting. But usually it's writing.
2. I knit everyday. My fingers get desperate to move for some reason so I do at least a few rows a day. I used to write all the time but the heat is playing silly buggers with me lately.
3. I think I am intermediate at the moment. I haven't done really complicated patterns but I can do the basics and fix my mistakes and have created a few patterns in my head. I say competent for writing.
4. I want to eventually make clothing but I am still to nervous to try it. As for writing, I want to write. Nothing more.
5. No for either. But if I could, I would totally try to make money.
6. Knitting is a craft, writing is an art.

I was a knitting fiend right after I took it up, but I've been so busy lately I haven't had much time for it. You did inspire me to get out a scarf I'm working and start back on it, however. :)

I think you'll be done with it way before you're 40, personally.

Wow, that's a lot of writing! Do you schedule time for it specifically?

And crochet is very cool. I love things that you can do while traveling, watching movies, etc. I've never had much luck with crocheting, but I love the way it looks.

1. Illustrating, painting, scrapbooking, photography, coloring stuff on the computer, and just general putzing around.

2. Not enough. I'd say it averages out to about an hour a day. Today I worked on a scrapbook for a client for about an hour (until I ran out of rubber cement), and on a computer doll for fun for about three hours. Note to self - what is wrong with this picture?

3. Professional! *heh* Sort of. I still have tons to learn, but I'm usually satisfied with the results.

4. To be able to support myself at least partially through art.

5. I'm making a little money with it, and it's definitely a goal to do it full-time, or as close to full-time as possible.

6. Both. It was funny to take classes with fine arts majors - we had such stereotypically different views of what we did, yet the end product (between fine art and illustration) wasn't all that different. I think it's the totally defined by the intent of the artist/craftsman, to be honest.

I remember being far too intimidated in college in my art classes (was a major for a while, ended up with a minor) by some of the people/instructors. I had a friend who wanted more than anything to do animation for Disney, and she got zero support at our school - I think some of the teachers, who were primarily fine artists, saw it beneath them somehow, which is completely ridiculous.

And still want to do interview/have art day. Argh! NEED MORE TIME.

1. Poetry

2. 1 hour a day.

3. Intermediate

4. Keep being published.

5. Yes I have made money but it isn't a cash heavy business.

6. Critics or observers usually use the word art while those who actually create the "art" many times call it a craft.

I think you should start referring to yourself as a "Poet-Slash-Artist".
