Two months to the day since I last posted something here. I think I'm going to make a new year's resolution to post at least once a month.
So the biggest thing that happened to me since my last post was going on a job interview at the end of November. I applied for the Commissionaires. It's another security company but at least it's one where I should have more of an opportunity for advancement. The interview went extremely well (thanks to a very good reference letter from Angela's father - he's an area manager for the company). The Commissionaires require all recruits to take a 2 week security training program through George Brown College and the next available one started December 4 (one week from the interview.) Unfortunately, that was a little too short notice considering that the cost of the course was $1000 (even though they offered me financing). I called back the recruiting manager a couple of days later to see if there was a course starting in January. There was one for January 8th. After talking things over with Angela, I submitted my 2 week notice. I also found out near the end of the month that the course had been postponed until the 15th and that I could go to the office the first week of the new year to do the financing.
December 15th was my last official day and Nora and Terry (the building managers) gave me a cake and a card with a $50 gift card for the movies. I was looking forward to my first (sort of) vacation in over 2 years and my first Christmas with Angela. Her parents had already planned a trip to New Brunswick for the holidays so Angela booked us a hotel at Niagara Falls for Christmas weekend. We had an amazing time. We came back the afternoon of Christmas Eve and on Christmas day we exchanged our gifts. But due to the damp and rainy weather at the Falls, Angela caught a cold and spent the rest of the week in bed.
We had no plans for New Year's Eve until a couple of days prior when I got a call from Tim inviting us to their last minute gathering. It all depended on how Angela was feeling. We decided to make an appearance. After getting a little lost, we made it to Tim and Heather's place around 8 pm. They have a really cozy little home. We caught up on whatever had happened since last time we saw each other and had some drinks and snacks and played Guitar Hero on Playstation. Such an awesome game. Around 9-9:30, Tim's friend Fred and his wife showed up and we played some more Guitar Hero. Around 11, Angela was feeling tired (still not completely over her cold) so we walked to Bloor, flagged down a taxi and headed home. We got home around 11:30 and settled ourselves into bed and at midnight, some jackass set off the fire alarm in the building. We would have been better off staying out.
So Angela's parents got back from New Brunswick a couple of days ago so we're heading out to their place this weekend to celebrate another Christmas with them and exchange gifts. Angela's mom is also going to cook up a big feast for tomorrow. I'm really looking forward to it.
Before I forget, on Wednesday, I called the recruiting officer for the Commissionaires and left two messages about the financing but never got a call back. On Thursday I received an email from him stating that George Brown has suspended their course for six months. I started to freak until I read further that they were doing the course in house on the 15th and that there would be no cost and all materials would be provided.
So things are looking up for the New Year. Wish me luck.
