A quick note on picking these stories:
I really just picked these five stories because I’d enjoyed them and I thought other people would as well. Then I organized them chronologically. When I put it all together and listened to it for the first time, though, I realized that these stories aren’t just about Castiel and how he changes through meeting the Winchesters, it’s about us, the viewers, and how our relationship with Castiel changes as we get to know him.
In
The New Jerusalem, by July, Castiel is distinctly Other. He is alien and frightening and righteous, and we don’t understand him. In
Never Shined Through, by Dotfic, we still don’t quite understand Castiel, but he’s in our sympathies. We’re rooting for him to make the right decisions. Then in
Love Is ..., by Vikki, he’s one of the good guys. He’s part of Team Free Will now, and we’re not just rooting for him, we’re cheering for him.
In
Twitterpated, by Fledmusic, he’s not just one of the good guys anymore. He’s one of us, and like all friends, we love him for his oddities as much as anything else, and even if he doesn’t understand what’s so funny. And by the time we finish with
And the Angels Sang a Chorus of “Going Down, Going Down, Going Down Now,” by Ignipes, he’s in on the joke with us. Because sometimes, you just need to fight a few zombies.
Many thanks to each of the authors for letting me put this together. It was a pleasure.
