(+) So, about two weeks ago I decided that I loved The Walking Dead and it was my new favorite show. And then the third episode aired. Oh man, I HATED that episode. I was literally yelling at the TV because of how much I couldn't stand it. UGH LET'S GET BACK TO ZOMBIES AND AWAY FROM THE WIFE BEATERS AND RACISTS, GUYS.
There are just...a lot of unpleasant characters and some very problematic racial and gendered stereotypes and I'm starting to worry it's less "these characters are assholes" and more "this show is an asshole" kind of thing. That said, I haven't watched last night's episode yet. So I'm holding out hope that last week's episode was an anomaly of terribleness and this week it will reclaim it's previous levels of awesomeness.
(+) I decided not to do Yuletide this year because the holidays are super-stressful anyway and I was watching the admin comm and...YIKES. It seems like the most stressful fic exchange EVER and I can't deal with that right now. I did get my assignment for the
lostsquee secret santa thing and I love it so much I can't even stand it.
(+) The semester is almost over and I have a ton of terribly-written student papers to grade, but I get to see my family in two days and two of my bffs are coming to visit soon and, in three weeks, I'll be on vacation. YAY.
(+) Last but not least, I managed to do the multimedia bingo for
lost_land.

Black.
black smoke of island,
miserable monster flies,
floating wistfully

Big. Sawyer/Juliet.
“I’m sure we’ll find them,” she says, sounding so sympathetic he almost can’t stand it. “It’s a big island.”
“Ain’t that big,” he says, taking a long drink of his beer and staring out into the jungle, trying to look anywhere but at her.
“How long are you going to keep looking?” she asks, eventually.
“As long as it takes,” he says, and it’s times like these that he hates the way she looks at him, like she can see right through him.
**
Hot. Sawyer/Juliet.
Sawyer and Juliet only have one fan for the whole house, one of those old oscillating floor fans, the kind that pretty much blow hot air at you, but hell it’s better than nothing.
Still, he’s trying to figure out how to wrangle a window A/C unit out of Horace when Juliet walks out of the kitchen, dressed in just a little white tank top and these tiny pajama shorts.
She’s got her hair pulled up in a messy ponytail and she’s running an ice cube across the pale skin of her chest. The top of her shirt is almost transparent from the melted ice cube and her shorts are sticking to her legs.
Sawyer sits in front of their shitty little fan and stares at her, deciding that maybe he don’t need to talk to Horace after all.
**
Soon. Sawyer and Miles.
“So,” Miles says, when they’re about halfway to the fence, “you managed to give Juliet that ring yet, boss?”
Sawyer doesn’t say anything, just glares at him sidelong and tries to stay focused on the dirt path out to the fence; damn drunk Horace, fucking around with dynamite in the damn middle of the night.
“I’ll take your silence as a no,” Miles says and Sawyer can practically hear the smirk in his voice. “I don’t know what you’re deal is, man-you know she’s gonna say yes.”
“Shut the hell up, Enos,” Sawyer says, slamming on the brakes when he sees Horace passed out not two damn feet from the fence, trying focus on Horace and not on the ring under the floorboards and the plan he’s got worked out for tomorrow night.

Each of these work as independent "one-song mixes", but it's also a 10-song mix about the quadrangle of doom. There's one song per character, one song per pairing (or two in the case of Sawyer/Juliet because I'm biased), and one song for the whole crazy messed up thing.
Direction. “Go West” // Liz Phair
Kate
take off / the parking brake / go coasting / into a different state / and I'm not looking forward to missing you / but I must have something better to do / I've got to tear my life apart / and go west, young man
Oh, Kate. Just keep running away from all the things that make you happy.
listen (lo-fi version) //
download (studio version) Back. “Handshake Drugs” // Wilco
Jack
the handshake drugs I bought downtown / they were translated poorly, I felt like a clown / I looked like someone I used to know / I felt alright / and if I ever was myself / I wasn't that night
A song about drugs and falling apart and losing who you are. Perfect for off-island, drugged-out, suicidal, we-have-to-go-back Jack.
listen //
download Truth (free space). “Man Named Truth” // Monsters of Folk
Sawyer
don't ever buy nothin' from a man named truth / never buy nothin' from a man named truth / look in my eyes and you see the proof / don't ever buy nothin' from a man named truth
A song about lies and searching for things that will ruin you if you ever find them. Which works well for Sawyer and both his obsessive need to find the original Sawyer and his masochist need to become him.
listen //
download Beauty. “This Girl is Taking Bets” // Thea Gilmore
Juliet
this girl is the wild smile, the icy stare / she's the crackle of the static, she's the curses, she's the prayers / this girl is the junkie in the children's matinee / she's the four-minute warning, she is hell to pay
Oh, Juliet. You are the prettiest, most awesomely complex, completely badass character of them all.
listen (live version) //
download (studio version) Home. “You Remind Me of Home” // Ben Gibbard
Sawyer/Kate
you remind me of home / the paint cracks when the water leaks from the rusty pipes that are just beneath my feet / you remind me of home / the heater's warm but fills the room with a potpourri of dust and gas fumes
Sawyer and Kate is a relationship that is very much about like calling to like. They’re just so similar in so many ways. The reason I couldn’t ever really see them working, though, is that those “likes” are pretty much the most destructive parts of both of them, full of anger and bad decisions and self-loathing. But they do make all of those things very attractive.
listen //
download Cold. “Winter Winds” // Mumford and Sons
Juliet/Jack
oh the warmth in your eyes swept me into your arms / was it love or fear of the cold that led us through the night?
Juliet/Jack is one of those pairings that seem, intellectually, like they’d work, but the whole thing that really makes people fall in love is just…not there. It’s a relationship (and song) about what should work, but doesn’t.
listen //
download Sorry. “Old College Try” // The Mountain Goats
Jack/Kate
from the entrance to the exit / is longer than it looks from where we stand / I want to say I'm sorry for stuff I haven't done yet / things will shortly get completely out of hand
Oh, off-island Jack and Kate. You guys were such a tragic mess and I loved every second of it.
listen //
download Pattern. “Patterns of Fairytales” // The National
Sawyer/Juliet
I fell in love with you no matter what you say / but you were right about the reasons
AUGH, SAWYER/JULIET. I’m fascinated by how their relationship started and progressed and it kills me that Juliet thought Sawyer was kind of just biding his time and he didn’t really understand how to tell her otherwise. This song kind of sad and slow and seems very post-Island Sawyer-who-is-depressed-and-missing-Juliet to me.
listen //
download Run. “Run” // Snow Patrol
Sawyer/Juliet
you've been the only thing that's right / in all I've done / and I can barely look at you / but every single time I do / I know we'll make it anywhere / away from here
It’s Snow Patrol and kind of cheesy and everything about it is SUCH a cliché, but idk, idk. It just really reminds me of Sawyer and Juliet and the end of S5 and how everything was just falling apart even while Sawyer was desperately trying to hold it together.
listen //
download Protect. “Protect me from what I want” // Placebo
Jack/Kate/Sawyer/Juliet
wedding bells ain't gonna chime / with both of us guilty of crime / and both of us sentenced to time / and now we're all alone
Oh, quadrangle of doom. Before the pseudo-happy ending in the finale, the whole thing is kind of a beautiful mess, full of guilt and destructive self-doubt and angst and people who kept undermining their own happiness.
