Title: Baking Up Some Love
Fandom: Bleach
Characters/Pairings: Byakuya/Hisana
Warnings: All the fluff. All of it.
A/N: Surprise #2! I hope you like it :3

You wake up early, this morning. Carefully, you slip out from under the covers and shift the pillow against your husband's side so that he does not notice the absence.

There is something you must do, and you wish to finish it before Byakuya awakens. You don't waste time looking for your slippers--instead stepping into the hall barefoot. It's nothing you haven't done before, and the floors of the Kuchiki manor are much kinder than the streets of Inuzuri.

Those servants that are awake at this hour approach and stop you as you pass, despite your efforts not to waste time.

(You've always found it more difficult to blend in, now, to disappear when necessary--even as large as the mansion is. They treat you as if you are meant to be here, as if you really belong among these nobles-by-birth)

They ask you, what are you doing awake, and can I get you something, Lady Kuchiki? Your answer to each of them is the same.

Please do not wake Byakuya-sama.

They leave you alone after that.

It takes some time, as you make your way through the halls of this house that seems almost too imposing without Byakuya at your side to reassure you that it is alright to live in it, but finally you arrive at one of the kitchens. None of the cooks are yet awake to guide you, but you are undaunted.

How difficult could it be, after all?

You gather the ingredients you can remember, though it takes you awhile to find it all. That was the easy part. Congratulations.

Half an hour later, and there is more "batter" on your face and clothes (on the counter, the cabinets, and surrounding walls) than is left in the bowl, and discouragement begins to settle in. If you ever knew how to do this, it is clear you have long since forgotten.

There are footsteps, and you look up from your ruined yukata to see Byakuya standing just at the entrance to the kitchen, and your face pales. You've not only made a mess of his kitchen and wasted his food, but you've ruined clothing that he'd given you. It's shameful, really, and once again you feel unworthy of all he's given you.

"...Hisana."

"Yes, Byakuya-sama?" You do not meet his eyes.

To your dismay, he approaches. Tilts your chin up, and--shockingly--wipes some of the batter off your cheek with a finger, and lifts it into his mouth. His voice is gentle when he speaks, warmth beneath the steel, and you do not understand. He should be angry for the embarrassment you've caused him.

"What were you doing?"

You still cannot bring yourself to meet his eyes, and you focus on the counter as you respond.

"I...forgive me, I was attempting to make something."

Byakuya seems bemused, and looks at her with a mixture of curiosity and concern.

"Hisana...if you were hungry, you need only have asked."

Your head jolts up at that, and contrition is matched in equal parts with surprise.

"No, no. It...it was for you." A pause, then she continues, more hesitantly.

"Cake. For your birthday."

At this moment, his face seems to go blank, something akin to shock in his eyes, and at first you think you really have displeased him.

But...then he smiles, and an arm wraps firmly around one shoulder while another comes to grip snugly at your wrist, still holding the ill-fated mixing spoon. Some apprehension lingers for moments, but the way he stands, protective, has that way of making you feel safe and loved, and slowly you relax against him.

"I see why you did not go to the servants, then. Perhaps you can show me, and we can complete it together."

The servants needed all night to return the kitchen to its once-pristine form, but no one seemed to really mind, for that day, the Kuchiki manor was filled with laughter and love such that is rarely seen in a noble house.
