Title: Happy Birthday, Hisana
Fandom: Bleach
Characters/Pairings: Byakuya/Hisana
Warnings: Extreme fluffiness
A/N: This was kinda rushed and written entirely on my phone so it's probably not the best, but I still hope this makes you smile. <3 Ilu. -hugs-
You wake at the break of dawn today, much earlier than usual. Very quietly, carefully, you slip out from under the covers and out of the room, so as not to rouse the delicate sleeping form beside you.
Today, you do not take the time to don the kenseikan, the scarf, the fingerless gloves--the symbols of your status as head of the clan. Today is not about you.
Your steps are purposeful, determined, yet graceful as you stride through the halls, greeting the servants that scurry to drop what they're doing and bow in deference (by this time they need no instruction; they know to wake early on this day) with only a curt nod as you check on the status of their various errands.
Rounds thus complete, your last stop before heading back to your and Hisana's bedroom is the kitchen, and you steal a glance out the window as you pass by the koi pond, steel gray eyes distant in thought.
There are a number of expensive gifts of various gifts for her stacked up in one of the multiple storerooms, but you've been looking to do something more. One of those 'simple' things that those who have nothing cling to so desperately.
Simplicity is a difficult concept for Kuchiki Byakuya to grasp, he who has lived his entire life in extravagance. But he has seen Hisana's eyes, her smile, how she lights up at moments that seem perfectly ordinary to him, and he is determined to grasp that which is unreachable by money or influence.
Back in your room, you settle back beside your wife as if you'd never left, and lay there in silence as you wait for her to awaken.
You're careful to close your eyes the moment she stirs, so that she does not feel guilty for remaining asleep after you've already woken, and exactly three minutes later (you count the seconds in your head--60, 120, 180) you make a slight show of 'waking up' for her.
"Good morning, Byakuya-sama," she says with a soft smile. You try to offer her one in return, but it is your eyes that hold the majority of the expression your face hides.
"Good morning, Hisana," you respond as you absently reach up to push a lock of her hair behind her ear.
The servant from the kitchen, who'd been waiting outside, enters the room shortly afterward, carrying a tray heaped with Hisana's favorites.
Breakfast in bed. Because it is her day and you will have her waited on in every way possible.
(Because you still depend heavily on the material things to show your devotion to her; you cannot help that burning desire to give her everything you have had, make her feel truly of the noble name you have given her.)
"When you are finished, there is something I wish to show you. ...There is no rush." The last bit is tacked on a bit quickly, almost as an afterthought.
"Won't you be eating, Byakuya-sama?"
"I can eat later."
And she then gives you that look, as if she wants to argue, to disagree, but will not, and you frown lightly a moment before picking up a peach from the tray and slipping it into your mouth.
She giggles at that, covering her mouth with her hand, and all is right with the world again.
Sometime later, she announces that she is finished, even though half the tray remains untouched.
You take her hand and lead her outside, to the gardens, stopping at the foot of one of the sakura trees.
"It is the first blossom of the season," you say, lightly brushing one of the delicate pink petals as you beckon her closer, "I thought you might wish to see it."
"It's beautiful, Byakuya-sama," she responds softly, violet hues flickering from his own steel to the light pink.
"...Yes."
There is distraction in your voice as you speak.
Beautiful. Yes, the blossoms are beautiful. Beautiful and fragile, just like her.
The other reason you wanted to bring her out here, to this garden which always makes her smile wells up in your chest, and your brows furrow slightly as you consider how to go about it.
It's something you had decided upon earlier this morning when you'd stopped to look out at the koi pond, as you'd been considering how to make this day special, but you still can't find the appropriate means to express it. It's not something you've ever said to anyone, after all.
...For something so supposedly 'simple', it is much more difficult than it seems.
Hisana catches on quickly, and a mix of curiosity and concern alights on her features.
"What is it, Byakuya-sama?"
A moment of uncharacteristic nervousness, before you remind yourself of your place. A Kuchiki does not hesitate. It is unbefitting for someone of your station to show such doubt.
"Bya--"
You cut her off as you cup her cheek and lean in to press a kiss against her lips. Pulling back slightly after a moment, you brush away a few more idle strands, as you had earlier this morning.
"Happy birthday, Hisana. I love you."
Silence reigns for a moment as her eyes widen in surprise.
And maybe you still don't quite have a grasp on this concept of simplicity than can make such ordinary moments as this magical, but when you see that surprise turn to a sparkle of pure joy, and her radiant smile as she moves forward to wrap around you and reaches up to kiss you back--
--You do know that there is no amount of money in the world that could even come close to being worth these few seconds of a day in your centuries-long lifespan.
