Phineas and Ferb - LIVE

Last weekend we took the boy to see Phineas and Ferb Live. This was just as much a treat for me as it was for him. I love that show. Seriously, it's one of the best shows on television. I know, I know. It's a cartoon, but that doesn't matter. It's clever, has running gags, and the characters are completely lovable. I have to say though, the production of the live show wasn't as great as I had hoped. I thought, "Hey, it's Disney, I bet it'll be pretty good." I was kind of wrong.

The songs were fantastic and the costumes were really cool. The awesome ended there though. I won't go into the story. I don't think it really matters. It was a passable story about them wanting to put on a great show for the last day of summer. It was the type of story that fit well into a show where they frequently step outside the fourth wall. They even had audience interaction. However, the volume of the show was inconsistent, the stage design was something I'd expect from a college show. It was just mediocre. Then the backgrounds (generated with CGI projected onto a screen) were AWFUL. They were this distorted, ugly 3D garbage. Seriously, they can't just have the animators of the show spend a few hours to just animate that crap for the live show? That is where I was really annoyed. I just kind of felt like they really phoned it in on the visual appeal of the show. Again, the costumes were really neat, but everything else, visual, was weak. Plus, some of the actors didn't really seem to care. They were clearly just doing the bare minimum to get their paycheck. I don't know, maybe that's the expected result from lip-synching? If you don't have to sing, maybe you feel like you don't have to do anything?

Still, it was a fun day. It was worth going. My son really enjoyed it. That's a win.
