addam waxes nostalgic - last bottle rocket, aug 2nd...

Jul 29, 2005 20:13

addam has summed it all up better than i ever could, and managed to remind me of
exactly how much is ending on tuesday.

i think i might have to cry.

purp

(i'd actually just been relating the bottlerocket crotch story to someone
recently... somehow i'd been thinking it was the Deep Eynde, but looking back
at the schedule, i guess addam's right)

tuesday, august 2nd, is bottle rocket's 4th and final anniversary.

bottle rocket has, for the last four years, been the DaDa of the Boston
alternative music scene. it started in the dust of Trash, the previous
tuesday tenants at O'Briens... needless to say, we wanted to take things in
a different direction. it was very take it or leave it, and i think we made
that pretty clear.
we (lady b, purp, and i) took the strangest elements we could find - which
was, essentially, us in high school, and broke out the songs we used to
drink, play, and sometimes get in trouble listening to. not that mullet &
bud guzzling crap mind you, but sporadic bursts of roots punk and
underground glam, hair bands and trashy metal, "romo" and deathrock (and
even sometimes, country and hiphop).
we've had some of the most unusual shows there - the brides, cinema strange,
the future starlets... our "house band", the glamorous stuntcocks... and
some pretty bizarre concept events. the "gogopunk" parties were always a
favorite of mine, we had pirates sometimes too... and the previously alluded
to "gangstas and crackers". it definately had charecter... and charecters.
remember that time the stuntcocks were shooting bottle rockets out their
crotches?
...and of course, purp's stompy firecracker guy, he started showing up on
the flyers in the first year - and my silkscreened patch remains forever
safety-pinned to my bag. we had some funny little handouts - my favorite
flyer ever is still the one for the "bad translations" party (admittedly,
it's a bit of a private joke).
on that note, we encouraged dj's to spin outside of their usual style. we
all like more music than we could ever fit into one event concept, so bottle
rocket was where we tried to squish all these crazy ideas together. you
never knew what you were going to get, because we never knew what might
happen... which is of course, why the emails have always gone out at the
last minute!
at $3 a head i don't think we ever made back any of the money we spent
putting that night on, which is of course, the reason that all good events
come to an end anymore. lady b and i both had to retire to pursue other
priorities... i'm pleased that purp was able to continue doing such
interesting things with BR for so long, i can't say i'm terribly surprised
to learn that he's got other priorities to attend to now as well, and
congatulate him on turning his dj apprenticeship into a booking position at
the club!
we did it because it was fun, and thankfully it was fun for some other great
people who came out to make the madness with us. that's what we did it for -
and you think that's fucked up, well... we told you so.

i really do wish it was possible for me to attend/contribute to the
last-ever bottle rocket... many many thanks to everyone who came out to
support and encourage our madness over the years, i hope you'll make it out
for this final bash, and yes, you can rub it in and tell me how much fun you
had. ;)

*hugs!*
