Sister Soldier

My sister was in surgery for nearly 8 1/2 hours yesterday. They removed a section of her large intestine due to the genetic disease we have called Gardner's Syndrome which, as I've mentioned before in reference to my recent medical stuff this past February, i s a form of polyposis that can, at times, develop into cancer. It seems the last time my sister was checked, a section of her intestine was so riddled with pollyps that they it had to be removed which is, unfortunately, pretty common. My mother had it done, my grandfather had it done...Uncles, aunts, cousins...Most likely I will at some point (I'm due to go get schecked in August again). In some extreme cases (such as my cousin Tommy who passed away while I was at Twisted Nightmare weekend this past fall) the colon needs to be removed.

The good news is that while they had her open, they gave her organs a complete run-through and she was pretty clean. That's a good thing. She'll, of course, be laid out for a while but she's alright.

My sister and I...We don't have the greatest relationship. It's MUCH better now that we're older. When we were kids, man...God...We HATED each other. She's had it pretty rough with her bi-polar disorder but, back then, we didn't know that's what it was. We just thought she was pain in the ass, really. Now that she's on medication and has some time to see some of the stupid things she did when she was a kid and the birth of my nephew ten years ago was a pretty big eye-opener for her as is this surgery. We get along much better. I called her Sunday so I could talk to her before she went under the knife and had a really great conversation. Throughout everything, she's my little sister and I love her.

Sometimes I really miss my family. I say that now, but I know that if they came to visit, within a couple of days I'll want to pack them up and send them the hell back to New Jersey. But, yeah, I do miss them. i wish I could have been there during her surgery. That was the idea, originally. I was going to go home for a week or two while she was recouperating to kind of hang out with my nephew but, well, then I lost my job and it all kind of came crashing down. I'm just glad she's okay.
