018 - let it all fall off

Holy shit, this snow's been crazy. And I was just talking about how I didn't really care for snow all that much. Like it just fine, but a July blizzard? Fuck that.

But, uh... Back where I'm from, it'd be Independence Day, Fourth of July. Though people don't really call it Independence Day anymore. I'm finally getting around to the point where I realize not everybody shares the same holidays as I do, so maybe some history's in order:

The short of Independence Day is to celebrate the freedom of the United States, my home country, from British monarchy rule. The fourth was chosen in particular because of the document very aptly named the Declaration of Independence. It was signed a good... week or up to a month before, I think, went under revisions, and was finally approved of by our government's legislative branch, the Congress, on that day.

Lot of people argue that it wasn't true independence. It was just independence for white guys, specifically landowners. Women and people of color weren't really given any rights. In fact, African men and women, and even children, were enslaved for years, and it wasn't for nearly a hundred years that slavery'd be abolished. There were continued acts of hate toward minorities, women included, going all the way up to even now, though it's a hell of a lot better these days than it used to be.

Yeah, lot of people argue it, try to make some kind of statement against it, but... I've been around the world a little. Been all over Europe at some point or another, parts of Russia, and, so far, I'm pretty happy where I am... was. I don't know if it's the best place in the world, but it was the best place I'd ever stayed.

Though pot's still illegal. You win some, you lose some.

For those of you who celebrate it, happy Fourth. For everyone else, it's a good excuse to have some barbecue and shoot off some fireworks for no reason at all.
