What Kind of Car was It?

Jul 25, 2019 16:04

Ken had carpal tunnel surgery at the end of June. I did not hold any classes or Frog Ponds for the first 2 weeks of July.

Class Options. Is anyone interested in a class on knitting a toy like a doll, dog, bunny or kitty? If so let me know so I can schedule something.

Beyond the Basics. From time to time I schedule classes in my Beyond the Basics section for knitters and crocheters that want to learn a little more than basic how to knit and how to crochet. Are you ready to stretch your knitting wings? For these knitting classes you must know how to knit and purl and be able to do so with ease. For the crochet classes you must know how to crochet into your foundation chain, how to chain, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet and triple crochet. Watch this space for the next Beyond the Basics class announcement. You can register for all of my classes on my website.

Yarn Wars

Don’t Knit This. Imagine a boa constrictor wrapped around your neck. That is what I imagine it feels like to wear this cowl. Luckily it won’t get tighter, but my claustrophobia is causing me to hyperventilate as I look at this photo.

Neck Brace

Ken stumbled across a new (to us) show. It’s on Tubi and it’s called Sea Patrol. It’s about a small Australian Navy warship and its crew. Their missions are very much the same as our Coast Guard so there’s a lot of boarding of other boats and ships and some arrests for drug and human trafficking and fishing violations.

Being modern it is a mixed crew of men and women. Ken has been out of the US Navy since 1993. While he was in, women were not on warships. They were on tenders and that was pretty much it. So this is a different Naval view than what Ken is used to seeing on a ship.

So back to Sea Patrol. We are just now starting the 5th season (out of 5 seasons.) So we have watched 80% of it. In the episode we watched last night, the XO shoots a 20 year old girl, who was shooting at her and her boarding party. The girl dies and the XO is very upset. She tears up every time the girl or the shooting is mentioned. The girl’s brothers were her partners in crime and have vowed to avenge her death. In one scene the XO and another female sailor were walking in a parking garage to get to the XO’s car. One of the brothers comes in and aims his car at the XO and tries to run her down. He is not successful. Later back at the ship, the ship’s corpsman is looking her over while the Master Chief and CO asks her about what happened. They asked for the make and model of the car. Together the XO and the female sailor with her say “Blue.”

This cracked me up because it is one of Ken’s pet peeves with me and Estelle. Ken said, “It must be a girl thing.”

During the next episode there were more tears. I said to Ken, “I can’t imagine there that many tears in the whole 20 years you were in the Navy.”

Ken said, “There wasn’t. And if this show had an all-male crew, they would have known right away the make and model of that car.”

Okay fine, I thought. But if the bad people had been wearing something knitted, I could have identified the stitch pattern and the yarn which could be very valuable clues. So there.

Unexpected Benefit of Knitting. It alleviates symptoms of anxiety, stress, and depression. The rhythmic motions and sense of focus can help distract from symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress. Sitting still to knit reduces your heart rate and lowers your blood pressure after a few minutes, so reaching for those knitting needles when you start to feel anxiety build or depression seeping in can help keep those symptoms at bay. What’s on My Hooks & Needles? Last week I finished one of the cashmere socks and cast on for its mate. I picked out some Jojoland yarn for this summer’s sweater project. I made my gauge swatch and I’m ready to go. I picked out yarn for a cabled hat that had been in my queue for a while and have about 3 inches into that hat now.

Currently on my needles are my mitered squares afghan from left over sock yarn and my purple cashmere merino pullover. All of the fancy work has been done. What is left are miles and miles of Stockinette Stitch and I need to reknit one sleeve. But I am actually considering that I might frog it. It is ¾ completed but I may have lost interest in it.

What’s on your hooks and needles?
