I don't look like that anymore

How long has it been?  At least  year I think.  A large part of me desperately misses the creative process of writing, as well as getting to see what others are thinking and doing.  I've made so many friends on forums such as this, which just has not been able to happen with Facebook.  One can't get to know what someone else is thinking through ( Read more... )

I think writing more about this would be really beneficial. I will go back and really try to get a handle on what was wrong with NZ. I have only felt really happy and at home in a place. That was when I was living in New Orleans back in 1978. I moved back to the Northeast because of family issues. Life in around NYC was just fine except for it being the height of the AIDS plague though making friends and finding lovers was really easy they kept dying. I moved to New England in 1986. It was actually during this period where all but one of my friends from NY died. I have always found the social scene in New England difficult. The scene was best summed up by my trips to Province Town. In the various bars I would see and be studiously ignored by all the local guys I hooked up with but wind up hanging out and talking to someone I knew from NY. This hit an all new low when people I knew from NY were replaced by people I met down in Atlanta ( ... )

The main reason we moved to Melbourne was because Phil had been unemployed for a significant amount of time a job opportunity had come up here. I was looking for a new opportunity and feeling a bit blah regarding Auckland, but was generally not unhappy with the place.

Melbourne itself, while perfectly fine as a city is on a flat plain with an immense suburban sprawl (especially with 4-million people). There's a quaintness to NZ and Auckland that we both miss, and something we'd like to go back to.

Well, you know how I feel about Australia as a whole. It is at times fairly beige. More shockingly is the fact that Australia was once a relatively progressive country, and now we are going backwards in so many ways!

Add to the fact that we are fucking miles from anywhere and it's not the cheapest country to live in.

I think when Melbourne was smaller, it would have been in it's own way a nicer place to live. Although in the 90's the city centre was dead after 5:00 PM. Now it's just miles of urban sprawl as far as the eye can see.

To be honest Auckland reminds me a bit of Melbourne, just with more hills. A fairly generic non descript modern city.

Derek's parents went to England about 12 months ago and they described England as "run down" and in need of a "good coat of paint".

Hobart use to be a bit of a hole but I have to say it's come along in recent years, I kind of don't mind it, even with it's isolation.

Having investigated the UK a bit more I think the minuses would outweigh the plusses.

Basically the problem is that everywhere has minuses.

Yup, they most certainly do. I guess it really just depends on what you are looking for exactly I suppose. I mean both you and Phil have gotten jobs, so you've ticked that off the list, but it seems like that in of itself isn't sufficient.
