I woke up at 8am (unheard of, usually) and, per our routine, fed Nazar and Rama. All hell breaks loose if I don't feed them srazoo (immediately). I then sat down at my Windows laptop and started correcting one of my student's homework when Rama kind of awkwardly slipped as he approached me on the couch. I just thought it was the divet between the two parts of our couch that had made him stumble and he snuggled into my crossed lap (in Elementary School they called it "Indian-Style"--yikes!), as usual, being adorable.

It was when he moved away from me that I noticed his hind legs were weak. I immediately made a video and sent it to Nikol. I had to cancel my lessons, Nikol had to cancel her appointments, and we were swept up into a vortex of "save Rama"! I had just said to Nikol not even a week ago that we're so lucky that Rama is healthy (after we'd just had a nightmare of Nazar's dental issues). Do not get Orientals unless you have a LOT of heart fortitude and resilience, and money. They're expensive, super sweet cats.
I was so happy to hear that it was not degenerative. It was an injury. Rama is 6 and 1/2 and not prone to taking any risks so we were surprised to hear it, but we did just move to a new flat on Sunday.
The outcome of his three hour surgery could be 1.) he dies from all the anesthesia he's been under today (this is my paranoia and what vets in the past have told me) 2.) he is no longer in pain but he can't pee nor poop on his own (been there, done that with Nikol's first cat, Josef. We can get a modified skateboard for Rama). 3. He walks again. This was given a 50% chance. Most important to me is his quality of life. Rama was dazed and starved for most of today but was fighting and so strong. He wants to live, and I'll do anything I can to make him happy in this current struggle. He is the sweetest cat I've ever had the pleasure to know. He uses his paws like hands in a way I've never experienced with another cat. We just play with each others' hands before we fall asleep.
