My rating:
3 of 5 stars This was an interesting take on Merfolk. They are the descendants of the pregnant women who were crossing the Atlantic as captives of the slave trade and were thrown overboard. Those women died, but their babies survived, changed by the ocean and until they could form their own society, raised by whales.
But to remain sane, for all intents and purposes, only one member of the society is given the memories of those who have gone, they hold the knowledge of where their race came from. This person is called the Historian. And once a year they share the knowledge with the whole and then take the memories back.
The current Historian is a 34 year old female who feels the pressure of the duty and during one of the annual ceremonies, does not take the memories back but instead runs away to the surface where she gets trapped in a tidal pool after a storm. There she learns more about the two-legged and what she must do to ensure the survival of her people and humanity.

This is a quick novella (4 hours by audio - around 160 pages written). It's read by Daveed Diggs (played Burr in Broadway's Hamilton) who co-wrote this story with two others. His reading is captivating and because of his musical nature, melodic.
I can't say I will ever return to this story but I would certainly recommend it if you need a quick read.
