2020 Around the Year Reading Challenge: A book with and "-ing" in the title

Love Lettering by Kate Clayborn

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I first came to hear of this book through a Goodreads Giveaway (I did NOT win a copy) and it sounded kind of interesting. Meg is a professional letterist - she hand letters wedding invitations and programs, designs personal planners, and all that kind of stuff. Sometimes, without realizing it she adds flourishes to certain letters in the project and if you put those letters all together they spell out something else.

One day, a year after hand lettering a program for a wedding, the groom comes into the shop she is working at, carrying the program. He asks her how she knew the marriage was not going to work out. When she questions him he points out that the flourishes she put in spells out the word MISTAKE. It turns out she was right - the wedding never even happened. She and Reid (the no-longer-a-groom-didn't-even-make-it-to-the-alter) start up a relationship as she tries to get him to learn to love the city of New York after he admits that he was thinking of leaving. They explore NYC looking for old hand painted and lettered signs and billboards to help Meg find inspiration for various projects she's working on, and help him momentarily escape the stress of his job on Wall Street.

Miscommunication happens all over Meg's life with Reid, Cybil (her roommate), Lark (a famous movie star client) and with herself. Mayhem, stress, and tears flow. Eventually things work out and life goes on.

For me the book was OK. I don't know why I wasn't expecting this book to be a contemporary romance (which it SOOOOO is). And that is not my cup of tea when it comes to romance books. But for what it was - it was not bad. I can very much see how others who like the genre would like it very much. but for me, when the book ended I just kinda shrugged and went looking for something new to listen to.

I will say that I did like Nicol Zanzarella's reading of the book and would not shy away from anything else she has read.
