Wow, it's been a long time since I posted... I'm sorry! I've been like... too busy to post, and not doing anything worth posting about. Like that makes any sense.
And more importantly I didn't have pictures resized and all so I didn't want to post without illustrations
Here's a quick recap, in backwards order.
This Past Weekend
Saturday consisted of trying to get rid of crap I don't need while watching the rain pour down. Also watching a squirrel launch itself from our shed onto the feeder and sit its fat ass there eating all our food!! It's a big jump, the thing has to take a running start. He's my new arch-enemy. At night Carlos and his sister and I saw V for Vendetta down at the Uptown (it has a 2-story screen and a balcony, it's really cool).
Sunday was yard work day. A feeder was hung on the pear tree with care, in hopes that some hummingbirds soon would be there. I also wrestled with the pond pump. The short version: the pump was broken, my dad told me how to fix it, I broke it worse trying to fix it. The long version involves a screwdriver, prying, horrified revelations, searching my trash can for little plastic pieces (a big gross outside trashcan, not a little inside one), two trips to the hardware store, and 2-ton epoxy to glue four little flaps back onto the pump. I'm still not even sure if it works!
This Past Week
Mainly consisted of getting in to and leaving work way too late
But there were a few cool thunderstorms.
This was Monday when I was leaving work... it started pouring as soon as I got in the car. Carlos was walking to his car when it got to his area, and he got hailed on!
This was on Friday... my work-friend Blake and I watched the rain move in from the west. This storm was less violent than the Monday one, but some lightening hit nearby and knocked out our power. It came back quickly but reset some servers or something and we couldn't log in to our computers. Good thing it was the end of the day and we were going home anyway!
Last Weekend
Last weekend was lots of birding!! Saturday was at the Nature Center. Not too many new birds but the weather was nice. Oh, and I happened upon the Great Toad Orgy of '06. There were easily a hundred of them, probably a couple hundred, swimming in the water in the marsh & mating. I also saw a huge snapping turtle but didn't get a picture.
A flower... unless it's a bird, I don't know what kind it is.
Except I think
sunnydale47 had a picture of this and said it was bloodroot?
Well, ok, at least I know these are daffodils
How YOU doin?
Sunday my dad and I went to Hughes Hollow, a swampy area north of us and over by the river. There were lovely Tree Swallows, some Brown Thrashers, and unfortunately a Brown-headed Cowbird (blegh!). And my lifer Rusty Blackbird, big turtles, and a muskrat. Here are some pictures! There will eventually be more info/a bird list over on
NatureKate.
Tree Swallows are so pretty, it's too bad my picture isn't better.
It's hard to tell in this picture but that turtle was really big. His shell was at least a foot long, maybe a foot and a half.
A muskrat that I was really hoping was a beaver.
Flutterbys. Again, not birds, so I have no idea what they are.
Except I think
urbpan had a picture of the one on the right and said it was a Mourning Cloak.
Aha, here it is! Thank God for LJ, huh!
ETA: According to BugGuide.net, the orange one on the left is an
Eastern Comma. It's spring, indeed!
Mmmm swamp! I think it will be a good place for my brother and I to film our epic, "When Ivory-bills Attack!!"
Yay for another foreverlong post.
Oh yeah...
A: Pilgrims! Hahahahahahahha I'm so funny! (I didn't make that up myself, of course.)
