I remember, just a few weeks after I moved into my first house, there was an enormous storm and the power in my entire section of Plano went down. I was completely dark, and of course because it was a stormy night, there was neither moon nor stars.
I hadn't been in my house long enough to have any "lights out" supplies, so I got a large coffee cup, and walked next door to my new neighbors(whose power was also out)
They answered the door, and I held up my coffee cup and said "HI! Can I borrow a cup of candles?"
They laughed and gave me some candles, and within about an hour, the whole street was lit by the candles that the neighbors had put in their windows. Because the storm had passed, many folks came out into the street, holding burning candles, to survey damage and chat with other neighbors.
It was so much fun, talking with all those folks in the invisible dark. I met several new neighbors that night.
Ironically, when the power came back on, the candles went out and everyone retreated back into their caves...
very sweet memory, and a very poignant thought...
a simple candle light can bring people together.
