I just watched Speak again. My non-spoilery thoughts are as follows:
I wish every book!movie was like this. It's not an exact representation of the book, but the movie is true to the story and, more importantly, true to the characters.
My biggest problem with the HP movies (besides the severe lack of Pigwidgeon!) is that the characters are misrepresented and the story gets changed so much that it's no longer the same thing. I know a lot of people disagree with me on this, but I think movie!Cedric is a douche, especially compared to book!Cedric (with whom I am sort of madly in love, because I occasionally like nice guys).
But Speak? Melinda's perfect- she has the right tone, she talks just enough, she grows and changes and oh man, love. And just. Everyone. I feel like all of the characters were perfectly cast and the directing was great and oh man, such love.
And the actual rape scene was just, so powerful. I don't know. It hit me a lot harder than the book did. It was actually hard to watch, which is exactly what it should be.
So if you've read the book and either you haven't heard of this movie or you were cringing at the thought of a movie version, I seriously think you should check it out. And if you've never read the book, I would normally say to read it before seeing the movie because that is one of my founding principles, but if you happen to catch the movie (it was on Showtime 2 tonight, which means odds are good that it'll be on all weekend and possibly in On Demand) first, it won't be the end of the world.
And Andy Evans is kind of cute. Even though. You know. Heh.
.....
In other news, I'm still working on the Pearl Jam icons. It's kind a new style for me- I'm usually very much "crop, sharpen, maybe up saturation a tiny bit, add a border, done!" but I'm playing around with more brushes and layers and contrast with these. And I'm using
the tour photos so there's already a lot of color and whatnot going on. If you're excessively bored and feel like checking them out, they're all
here and 99% text-free at the moment. Comments and criticism welcome, cos I'm flying by the seat of my pants here ;)
(Hee, LJHook chose a Pearl Jam icon for this entry. It *is* psychic!)
