Got a call from the management office. They are completely sanguine about my revised moving date. Not a whiff of a mention of paying even for the extra week.
I will remain prepared for someone over their head to get cranky, because I checked my lease and it says that if they take me to court to get a judgement against me, they don't have to inform me that they are taking me to court. WHAT THE FUCK DID I SIGN.
Yes, I am that paranoid. When you are raised by lawyers, this is how you think.
ETA: went to speak F2F with the property manager, and she was all, "Oh, no, they won't do that. Don't worry. They'll just charge you for the days that you are staying extra." So that's a load off my mind.
They're going to renovate my apartment before the next tenant moves in. He's going to have to delay his move (from Dec 1), but he's moving from another unit in the complex, so that's doable.
----------
On the good side, I and mine are all safe and well. My sister's apartment is at the edge of Zone A, so they were probably evacuated. Fortunately, she is on the other side of the Atlantic at the moment, and has no pets to worry about.
Got a call from the HVAC people. My appointment was for next week, but they had all their techs on standby for storm clean-up and didn't need them, so they called to ask if I wanted the service today. Since I'm not going to the office, I said what the heck, sure, let's get it done. So that will be happening while I assess the damage to my house. Hmmm. It might be inconvenient for the HVAC guy if I don't have electricity...
ETA: Yep, no electricity at the house. Cancelled the HVAC guy (or rather, moved back to the original service date). Having trouble getting PECO on the phone, doubtless because a jillion other people are trying to call them.
The wire to the house from the pole is intact, and the neighbors have no electricity, so it's obviously something further up the line.
"Emergency backup generator" has moved higher on the priority list. It'll take a year or more to save up for it, so I'll see how often the power goes out in that time and reevaluate my tolerance for being thrown back to the dark ages.
(Prediction: if it goes even one more time in the next year, I'll spend the money. The main causes of blackouts are overuse of the system in the summer, and storms. If it's hot enough to cause a blackout, then it's hot enough for me to need A/C. If it's a winter storm, I need electricity to keep the place warm. If it's a nor'easter or tropical storm/hurricane, I need electricity to keep me entertained. I am a child of the 20th century, dammit.)
----------
My mother called me to inform me that the tree in front of her house lost a lot of big branches. My first reaction was "And...?" But she was just calling for comfort. I think seeing actual damage startled her. Also, we are now rather glad that she took down the giant maple last year. As sad as I was at the time, I'm not sure it would have survived this storm, and there is no direction it could have fallen that wouldn't have crushed a house.
Thank you all for your well-wishes!
Now back to our extended "Crap, I'm moving and I'm not packed!" programming.
oh the weather outside is frightful
