When you exit the New Jersey Turnpike at exit 9 to switch over to route 1, there is the following sign:

YOU HAVE LEFT THE NEW JERSEY TURNPIKE. PLEASE OBSERVE ALL LOCAL SPEED LIMITS.

...as if you weren't required to observe the speed limits on the NJ Turnpike.

I expect it's an acknowledgment of reality. Everyone speeds on the NJTP, often twenty or even thirty miles over the limit (which is 65mph in clear weather). An accurate translation of that sign would be:

WE KNOW YOU JUST GOT OFF THE TURNPIKE, BUT YOU'RE IN A TOWN NOW, SO JUST SETTLE DOWN, LEADFOOT.

Makes me crack up every time. It's also an effective sign, because yep, it does remind me that I need to readjust my perception of speed for the new road.
