computer woes

Our mac has been acting a little odd, not just lately, it always has, but it is gettin' worse. Programs not opening with all the parts, suddenly closing, things just not working right quite right. I always wondered if there was some little thing wrong with it, since I had to archive and install the OS when it was just 2 months old. We have never liked the HP all-in-one printer/scanner/copier, which has the worst software. Duke suggested we get something else.

I took it over to Gary's last week. He suggested:
Clear out caches
Run Disk Warrior [to restore the libraries?]
Run a sudo command to restore the pre binding.

We set up our machines side by side and he run these on his machine first. Took all of about 5 minutes. We then tried it on ours. Clearing the caches did fine. Terminal would not run the sudo command. Gary was not sure if it had to do with the difference in OS [he has Panther, we have Tiger]. Disk Warrior ran for an hour, and stated that we didn't have enough memory.

I checked, we have:
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 256 MB

I'm a little confused, I though we had 512 RAM

Duke and I happened to be in Comp USA and we saw their "Mac Guy". Handsome guy, with a goatee, long hair and very hairy arms. We talked to him for a bit and his thought was to save to cd all docs, photos, etc. and reinstall the OS and other software, instead of archive and install.

Interesting, because that is what I was thinking of doing....

The mac guy also stated that macs have issues with all-in-one devises and we should think of getting a separate printer and scanner/copier.

Any thoughts out there...?
