family ties

I'm always caught in this uber guilt-trip whenever Grandma makes her yearly visit from Texas because essentially, she's really annoying. She's one of those hardcore Vietnamese-mid-countryside folks and you can imagine how insanely traditionalist those can be.

She sobbed when she discovered i never had a Buddhist girlfriend because she imagined the unthinkable day Christian great-grandchildren who worshipped Jesus with names she couldn't pronounce would leap maniacally from my loins. It got worse when she knew they weren't Vietnamese.

I've told these incidences often, and i should be repulsed by finding amusement in them. I mean, we feed her non-stop doses of Buddhist vegetarian meals and television so she wont talk to us. No one in the family can understand her cryptic tongue, even my father...and he's her freaking SON! We once did her a disservice by showing Monsters, Inc. She sat there in utter confusion, wondering how these genius American actors were able to have eight eyes and blue fur. Once, she watched Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, and nearly dropped dead because there was a talking cat. We bought her a new sofa-bed since she kept falling off my sister's bed.

And now, she's here for eye surgery and i've completely erased all those cruel thoughts, cuz DAMN, the old woman is helpless! She's wearing a freaking eyepatch for fuck's sake! I woke up this morning and she was doing her daily incense run and buddhist chants...and while exiting the kitchen she crashed into the refrigerator. like, BOOM!

"I couldnt see it with my one eye," she moaned in her cryptic Vietnamese. She was writhing in intense pain, and i was left to plant the incense into the soil pots for her...and ran late for 1st period. It's really sad. The point of all this is to come to terms with my love for poor ol' Grandma.

Blood runs thick, but damn that, 'cuz karma's a bitch. I refuse to continue this animosity cuz when i'm a helpless old man with sadistic grandchildren who laugh at me i'll be so sad.
