Card Games

Recently, Hilary has been tryng to teach me card games. I had a decent idea of how to play blackjack, and that was about it. I didn't grow up playing any card games. That just wasn't something my family was into, and any time I had a chance to play cards with other people, they usually knew exactly how to play, and I didn't, and any explanation they gave me on how to play usually involved a lot of terminology I didn't understand anyway. Anyway, I can't recall a single time I played a card game and actually enjoyed it.

As long as I can remember though I've had a strong aversion to card games. I mean, really quite strong. I'm not sure exactly why. Being a video game fan I often jokingly use the excuse that games have evolved beyond those old card games, and playing them is the equivalent of carving a letter for someone on a stone tablet, or using cave paintings. I know that's silly really, but I do like to say it.

I can think of a good reason I might prefer other types of games to card games. Most of the games I like involve use of imagination or tell a story in it's own right. Card games are far more abstract things. They are simply what they are. The cards aren't rival armies or anything like that. They are just cards. So that's fine, except my aversion to cards goes deeper than that. I really would generally avoid them at all costs.

I have done ok with Hilary as a teacher, and maybe eventually I'll even like them, but right now it's just a skill I feel I should learn because so many others like it, and I don't want to be antisocial.

I am the only one who has an aversion to an activity like this?
