Ever since Spencer was a teen, he had always been self conscious of his body. He hated the fact that, even after they were signed and a little while after, he had puppy fat he just couldn’t budge. He wished so many times he could swap bodies with Ryan, or Brendon, just so he knew what it was like to be skinny, to not have fat on his tummy, what it was like to be perfect. He could never over come it, even when everyone told him he looked fine with the way he was, there was always that niggling feeling in the back of his mind, the one that told him he just needed to lose some more weight.

He had tried the whole tight clothes thing once he had eventually lost the puppy fat, but he still felt horribly fat and self conscious inside, but he never voiced it, never told anyone. Why did he need to bother other people with his problems? They didn’t need to worry about it, it was his problem, he could deal on his own.

Whenever he was alone, he was look at himself in the mirror, poking at his tummy, his thighs, his arms, wishing he could be perfect, like everyone else he knew. There were still times he would spend huddled in bed with a pillow, silently crying about his body, praying to anyone listening that they could give him the body he’d always dreamed of.

After Ryan and Jon left him and Spencer, it seemed to have got worse. Sure, he lost more weight, but he still wasn’t happy with the way he looked. He hated himself.

Sure, he was told almost every day by people how great he looked, but it didn’t matter what they thought, it’s how he himself felt.

But it was one night when he and Brendon and everyone had got back from China, he was over at Brendon’s place, watching films and having a bonding session, as Brendon put it. Spencer didn’t argue.

“So, Spence, can I play you something?” Brendon said suddenly, in the middle of watching Nightmare Before Christmas.

Spencer was a little puzzled, but figured it was for a new song. “Sure, go for it.” He replied.

Brendon picked up his acoustic from beside the couch and started to play an intro, one that Spencer faintly recognised. Then, as Brendon began to sing, he recognised it completely, but with a slight difference.

Spencer sat, listening, hearing how Brendon had changed the feminine parts to masculine, and he sung right at Spencer, his eyes boring into his.

“Yeah I know, I know,
When I compliment him,
He wont believe me,
And its so, its so,
Sad to think he don't see what I see.”

Spencer looked away at that point. Why was Brendon singing this to him? And why now?

“But every time he asks me do I look okay, I say,
When I see your face,
There's not a thing that I would change,
Cause you're amazing,
Just the way you are,
And when you smile,
The whole world stops and stares for awhile,
Cause boy you're amazing,
Just the way you are.”

Spencer looked back at him, seeing total sincerity in his eyes as he sang and made his way to the second chorus.

“His nails, his nails,
I could kiss them all day if he'd let me,
His laugh, his laugh,
He hates but I think its so sexy.”

As Brendon sang that, he waggled his eyebrows. Spencer couldn’t help but smile at that, there was no way he couldn’t.

“He's so beautiful,
And I tell him every day,
Oh you know, you know, you know,
I’d never ask you to change,
If perfect is what you're searching for,
Then just stay the same,
So don't even bother asking,
If you look okay,
You know I say,
When I see your face,
There's not a thing that I would change,
Cause you're amazing,
Just the way you are,
And when you smile,
The whole world stops and stares for awhile,
Cause boy you're amazing,
Just the way you are.”

Brendon’s voice dropped as he played softer, looking more intently at Spencer.

“The way you are,
The way you are,
Boy you're amazing,
Just the way you are,
When I see your face,
There's not a thing that I would change,
Cause you're amazing,
Just the way you are,
And when you smile,
The whole world stops and stares for awhile,
Cause boy you're amazing,
Just the way you are.”

As he let the last note ring out, Spencer was stuck for words for a few moments. “Bren, why…” He started, but Brendon interrupted him.

“Spence, I know that you don’t think you’re perfect, or anything close, but I didn’t know of another way of telling you how wrong I think you are.” Brendon took a deep breath before continuing. “I’m not gonna lie to you, ever since I saw you, I’ve always thought you looked good, and for a while now, it’s not been platonic or anything either, and I just… Spencer, you just don’t seem to know how good you actually look.”

Spencer looked down at his hands through the whole of Brendon’s speech, and still looked down at them after his finished. Brendon took the opportunity to put his guitar down, shuffle towards him and tilt his head up again. Spencer’s eyes were glassy, but he said nothing as Brendon leant forward to kiss his lips ever so softly.

“I want to be the one who shows you how the rest of the world sees you. How I see you.” He leant back and bit his lip, looking into Spencer’s eyes. “Please let me be the one who shows you.”

Spencer knew that his own problems weren’t going to just disappear because of a simple kiss, but he knew that if he had Brendon’s help, maybe he could one day see himself as everyone else saw him, maybe he would be alright with himself.

His last thought as he moved in to kiss Brendon back was that maybe, just maybe, things were going to be okay now.
