First, the literature-related part:
Today, I decided to go to the flea market (it's been over a year and I thought I'd check it out) and, well, I found a book stand and was a happy nerd. Especially since there were an entire TWO shelves dedicated to Star Trek published fanfiction novels. <3 I only wound up getting six books, but I might get more if I go back anytime soon.
TEH BOOKS:
*Vulcan's Glory by D.C. Fontana (Yes, the D.C. Fontana. She was one of the writer's for TOS.) (It's about Spock's first adventure on the Enterprise with Captain Pike. I'm excited to read this one.)
*Vulcan! by Katleen Sky (This is supposed to be one of the most hilariously bad Star Trek novels out there... There's a Mary-Sue and everything! :D Bought for teh lulz.)
*Star Trek III: The Search For Spock by Vonda N. McIntyre (I'll admit: I'm a sucker for movie novelizations.)
*Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home by Vonda N. McIntyre
*The Nitpicker's Guide for Classic Trekkers by Phil Farrand (It's a factoid book for TOS and the first six movies. Fascinating.)
*Sarek by A.C. Crispin ("Hey look! A book about Spock's daddy!" I thought. Then I read the back:
"Sarek?" Amanda called out softly.
Spock sat by his mother's beside, holding her small, cold, wasted hand in both his own, as though he could somehow transfer some of his strength to her by doing so.
The room was bathed in sunlight, and the monitoring devices were subdued, non-intrusive. As Spock watched his mother, her lips parted, and she spoke. Barely more than a breath escaped. A breath that was a name.
"Sarek...?"
She had been calling his father's name for hours, and the sound of it wrenched Spock's heart as nothing in his life ever had. "I am here, Mother, I am here. Spock... I'm here with you, Mother." She opened her eyes again, stared vacantly at him. Fretfully, she tugged her hand away from his.
"Sarek?" she murmured, turning her head on the pillow, seeking someone who wasn't there....
Oh yeah, I'm going to like this one.)
I also explored a collector's stand that had some Star Trek memorabilia... I almost bought the Spock christmas tree ornament... until I saw it was $20. :( They also had some plates and mugs, but nothing really tickled my fancy that was in my price range. Well, Star Trek related. I did buy the Elvis!Stitch toy that McDonald's released way back when and a Chick-fil-A cow plushie. :) If the place hadn't been so hot and a lot of the stands not shut up EARLY, I would have to say it was a very pleasant flea market trip.
Then I went exploring and found a comic book store. This is where the rant comes in.
Dear Comic Book store employees,
Ignoring a customer who is genuinely interested in purchasing something is NOT COOL. Especially considering I was THE ONLY DAMN CUSTOMER IN THE STORE after a few minutes. If you would have been busy, I would have been more understanding. But since checking your facebook page was more important than asking a customer how they were doing, I'll just be taking my business elsewhere.
Thanks for nothing,
DPAK
P.S. Not to say you two were sexist or anything, but I honestly think that if I had been a guy, you would have paid attention to me. Just a hunch. Ya know, considering how when I first entered, you were all chatty with the male customer that was browsing. But goodness knows, don't even say a word to the girl (ew, cooties) or anything.
