Once again, another week has flown by. Really - how am I surviving this semester so well so far?? (I hope I'm not speaking too soon...I still have a shit load of homework to do over the weekend...oy)
Nine has been going really well. I felt really good about my playing last night :)
Yesterday I got some shocking and thrilling news -- but first some recap info:
back in December, I submitted an application to the John Lennon Songwriting Scholarship Competition (run by MENC) with my song "First" ...although I really confident in the quality of the song, I was sure nothing would come of it.
Well! Last night I got an email saying that I've been chosen as a FINALIST!! Ahhhhh!! I almost started crying!...annnd then I found out I was one of 44 finalists. lol...
looking at MENC's website and article about the finalists I found out that there had been 93 applicants and 44 finalists (by state -- so Jacob Danieley and I are the finalists from NC!). They won't be announcing the winners until JUNE - dangit! ...*sigh* well, even if I don't win anything, I'm thrilled to have been a finalist. They're sending out certificates in a week or so, so that'll be nice to have :)

In other news (now, for something completely different!)...I'm now (after much running around) registered for my first semester hour of MUS 499 (research). Since I had to drop my lessons with Jon (long story), I had space for one more credit hour (to be at 20sh). Plus, I realized last week that having 499 would really really really help with getting my research planned out so that I can hit the ground running in the Fall.
So, the research topic I've decided on (for now) is the effects of learning jazz improvisation on student performance in second language acquisition. I'm thinking about doing some improv workshops at a middle school and then working out some means of assessing student knowledge/improvement in the language classroom. I'm really excited...but for now, I have to wade through my least favorite stage of the research process -- reading previous literature. Ugh. Well, I guess I should try to look at it in a positive light since I'm going to be spending the next month or so doing it...*shrug*
The most nerve-wracking and exciting thing that's coming up is the deadline for applications for the Lumen Prize - a $15,000 scholarship awarded to 15 rising juniors with exceptional promise in their research. Many professors have told me I have a good chance of getting it...and I would agree...it's just terrifying the amount of work that needs to go into this application. *deep breath*

Anyway...
Oh! Also...I was recently elected to the position of Vice President for Mu Phi Epsilon! Very exciting! I'm also a little nervous that I will suck at it because I'm so busy...but I do love MPE, so hopefully things will work out!

Last but not least - Happy Valentine's Day :)
