"In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned. Our journey has never been one of shortcuts or settling for less."
As I watched the events of this morning into this afternoon...I sat, teary-eyed with fellow Elon students, Elon professors, and various others, as the 44th President of the United States was sworn into office. This President that MY VOTE helped to elect...this President that has inspired a mantra of hope and confidence that has never been so wide-spread in this country. Never before have I been proud to call myself a citizen of the United States of America - NEVER have I actively supported the choices and actions of our nation's highest leader. This refreshed feeling of hope and determination is so incredible...and I am so grateful to be alive to experience this historic day in our country's history.
For those citizens that still speak of President Obama with disdain, dislike, or disappointment I want to make one point. When Obama gave his acceptance speech on election night he said something that must have fallen on deaf ears - "And to those Americans whose support I have yet to earn - I may not have won your vote, but I hear your voices, I need your help, and I will be your President, too." Please don't close your ears his words because you disagree with his views or because you voted for McCain - Obama IS YOUR PRESIDENT, TOO.
"On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord."
If you cannot support your President in a time of change and turmoil, can you really hope for anything to change for the better? United we stand - right? I hope so.
Today marks the start of a period of America's history in which we can be filled with true and sincere hope for the future.
Peace,
K
