The Great Scarf Auction

Saturday, September 17, 3:00 pm

The auction has closed! (A bit early, I know, but I'm leaving for the weekend in a couple of hours.)

Thank you all so much for volunteering your bids, pimpage, skills, and general good vibes to this little project. We've raised $190 for hurricane relief!

And the biggest thanks, of course, go to bookworm_myrtle, ezagaaikwe, and dawnydiesel, who won ( Read more... )

Woohoo! You have perfect timing, too. I'm leaving for the weekend in a couple of hours, so I think I'll just go ahead and close the auction with your bid -- I won't be around to close it at midnight, anyway.

Thanks so much for doing this!

Just out of curiosity, how did you find us? :)

I believe on a thread somewhere at fandom_charity.
Will the colors and patterns and such be a surprise or do I choose or what? I'm completely new to this, LOL.

Ah, that's right -- I totally forgot that I promoted the auction over there. Silly me. :)

You get to choose everything about your scarf. Yarns and patterns, all of it. (If you need some help narrowing it down, I can help you pick.) It's probably easiest if you just tell me what kind of colors, material, etc. you'd like, and we'll work it out. These are completely made-to-order.

Jingle, do you want me to take this one? Or do you want me to do ezagaaikwe's? (Yes, I am hoping you'll do the $100 scarf... that's just too much pressure for me.)

Hee! Well, since it looks like you two are already figuring out this one, how about you go ahead and make dawnydiesel's. :)

Well, I know I want a long one with fringie type stuff at the ends, not WAY fringie but some tendrils nonetheless. I'm about six feet tall and the coat/s the scarf will go with is a longer coat. Right now, the coat I would wear it with is a black suede coat but I've been making some pretty strong "hints" about wanting a long walker coat (as seen here) (Just not in cashmere, cuz dude, really not that rich, LOL). I would like it to be brighter type colors that would look good with either a black or a brown coat. I also don't want it very thick or of course, very itchy.

So, um yeah...now that I look at that paragraph, I seem rather picky. :-( Which, actually, I'm not. If it's easier or more cost and time conducive to make something else, by all means. My main concern is the length.

Thanks again for this :-)

Well, there's two ways to go about it. You can either find a pattern you like, and then go looking for yarn that will work in it. Many if not all patterns will list what yarn it's meant for. Or, you can find a yarn you like, and then go looking for a pattern it would work in. The main concern is that the yarn you choose be the same thickness as the yarn in the pattern. This is usually listed as weights such as worsted (most scarves) or bulky (thicker).

Some nearly random clicks from Crochet Pattern Central scarf patterns site found some possibilities you might like. Personally I like this sideways fringed scarf which has the fringe along one side rather than at the ends. That's if chenille appeals to you.

If you want something multicolored, you could choose one like these long scarves, although they have rather long fringe. We could make the fringe shorter, but too short and it might look odd with that long a scarf.

Or, if you want some stitch variation, you might like this long scarf with loopy fringe that I mentioned ( ... )

On second thought, that Jewel Box scarf is pretty wide to be made much longer... but I might be able to make it narrower as well as longer. I don't want to promise, though, since that involves math. ;-)

I LOVE that Jewel Box scarf. The design is absolutely gorgeous. I like the length of the long ones on the joann site. They're really beautiful as well. The length of the scarves on that link is exactly what I'm looking for. I can't see the patterns too well but I just loved the length and the look of the scarf in general. As for the Jewel Box one, I *do* like the pattern and you said it could be made longer pretty easily so....LOL. This is more difficult than I thought.

Anyway, those are the two that I REALLYREALLY like. I have absolutely no imagination when it comes to colors. I just know that right now, I have a black suede coat but I will (darn it, if I have to buy it myself) have a brown one.

The Joann scarves are pretty basic in terms of the pattern - they don't really have texture, the interest comes from switching colors. I do think I can make the Jewel Box Scarf longer and narrower, I'll just have to do some calculations to make sure the pattern turns out right. Based on the cubic inches for 2 skeins, 3 skeins could make a scarf 6" wide and 7 ' long, and 4 could make one 6" wide and 9'4" long. Of course those are approximate since everybody crochets a bit differently, but that's the rough idea ( ... )

I'd be happy to make one of the Joann scarves too, but that's waaaaay too many different colors for me to try to make suggestions. *g*

Yeah, the coat I'm looking at would be a lighter brown coat. That's assuming my husband is a smart one and buys the one he *should*, LOL.

And actually, the more I think about (with the aid of your suggestions) bright might not be the right choice in order to go with both coats. The Moonstone (on the Joann site is what I'm assuming you meant) is rather pretty.

I think I'm going to go ahead with artist discretion here. You're the one that knows what she's doing and you have a pretty good idea what I want (long with fringies and something that will go with both brown and black). If you think a whitish, creamish, beigish would look best, then by all means go for it. If you think a burgundy would, then sure, etc... Just go nuts, hon.

Thank you again for this. I'll be making the donation tomorrow when I go into town.

I meant on the Moonstone on the Caron site... it's the color shown on the pattern page, and I do think it would go nicely with either brown or black. I think I will do it in that color, unless I decide the Ruby looks spectacular in person.

Would you prefer it to be about seven or about nine feet long? Either is totally fine. Either way it'll probably take me a couple weeks to complete, since it's rather intricate. You can send me your snail address at skycaia (at) yahoo (dot) com.

Thank you for your donation!

Yes, that Moonstone is gorgeous. See? I deferred to your judgement already and it was fine :-) But, seriously, if you like the Ruby better when you see it, do that. It's up to you, I think both will look gorgeous.

As for length, I would say nine feet long but again, whatever you think works and as long as your hands and fingers hold out!
