The auction has closed! (A bit early, I know, but I'm leaving for the weekend in a couple of hours.)

Thank you all so much for volunteering your bids, pimpage, skills, and general good vibes to this little project. We've raised $190 for hurricane relief!

And the biggest thanks, of course, go to bookworm_myrtle, ezagaaikwe, and dawnydiesel, who won ( Read more... )

The Joann scarves are pretty basic in terms of the pattern - they don't really have texture, the interest comes from switching colors. I do think I can make the Jewel Box Scarf longer and narrower, I'll just have to do some calculations to make sure the pattern turns out right. Based on the cubic inches for 2 skeins, 3 skeins could make a scarf 6" wide and 7 ' long, and 4 could make one 6" wide and 9'4" long. Of course those are approximate since everybody crochets a bit differently, but that's the rough idea.

As for colors, since you said you wanted bright colors, I think the Ruby or the Lapis would probably work pretty well, depending on how dark brown the coat is. Either would look good with a light-medium brown I think. The Sapphire or Amethyst could also work. If you're not set on bright, I think the Moonstone they used is nice, or maybe Jade or Emerald. I'd just stay away from yarns that have either black/grey or brown in them, like Tiger Eye or Obsidian, so your scarf could go with both coats.

If you can't decide and would like me to choose (based on what my store has and what I think looks good in person), you could give me 2-3 favorites.

Or if you're not particularly taken with any of the colors there, you could substitute another yarn. Jiffy would make a fuzzier scarf; Color Waves would make a knobbier scarf. And they'd change the guage and look a little, but I could probably make them work.

I'd be happy to make one of the Joann scarves too, but that's waaaaay too many different colors for me to try to make suggestions. *g*

Yeah, the coat I'm looking at would be a lighter brown coat. That's assuming my husband is a smart one and buys the one he *should*, LOL.

And actually, the more I think about (with the aid of your suggestions) bright might not be the right choice in order to go with both coats. The Moonstone (on the Joann site is what I'm assuming you meant) is rather pretty.

I think I'm going to go ahead with artist discretion here. You're the one that knows what she's doing and you have a pretty good idea what I want (long with fringies and something that will go with both brown and black). If you think a whitish, creamish, beigish would look best, then by all means go for it. If you think a burgundy would, then sure, etc... Just go nuts, hon.

Thank you again for this. I'll be making the donation tomorrow when I go into town.

I meant on the Moonstone on the Caron site... it's the color shown on the pattern page, and I do think it would go nicely with either brown or black. I think I will do it in that color, unless I decide the Ruby looks spectacular in person.

Would you prefer it to be about seven or about nine feet long? Either is totally fine. Either way it'll probably take me a couple weeks to complete, since it's rather intricate. You can send me your snail address at skycaia (at) yahoo (dot) com.

Thank you for your donation!

Yes, that Moonstone is gorgeous. See? I deferred to your judgement already and it was fine :-) But, seriously, if you like the Ruby better when you see it, do that. It's up to you, I think both will look gorgeous.

As for length, I would say nine feet long but again, whatever you think works and as long as your hands and fingers hold out!
