the almost, emery, envy on the coast, army of me

so greg and kelsey are completely useless when it comes to doing anything. when we got to des moines, we couldn't find the venue, so we parked and tried looking more. we didn't see it, so they decided we would just stop and stand there instead of asking someone or something. i say we should ask someone, so we go into some kind of government place that was really small and intimidating. we got in there and they didn't say anything, so i talked to the guy and found out where it was. then we saw the venue, but decided we needed a bathroom first. so we went to find one. we walked down the street looking for some restaurant with a decent amount of people for it to not be awkward. there weren't really any there, so what do we do? stop and stand there, because that solves everything. i say if they're gonna be completely useless, i'm just gonna go back and wait in line. so we do for two seconds, then they decide they'll go find a bathroom. so we go into a bar with like six people there, then go back to the venue and wait in line.

pretty much as soon as we got in, four word cause started playing. i really have no idea who they were, and i didn't even know they were playing until i saw their drum set on stage. but yeah, their set was decent, but the crowd wasn't really getting into it, and it's hard to when no one else is. they played maybe six songs, then army of me went on.

before army's set, the guitarist came on and was getting stuff set up and he goes
"how are you guys tonight?"
"wonderful"
"good, because i only let wonderful people stand on my side"
he was pretty asm. then he told me he liked my shirt. and he was really getting into their set. he would close his eyes and dance around and it was asm. they played really really well and i really enjoyed their set. i wasn't even planning on taking pictures during their set, but i took my camera out on their last song and took a couple. then the guy behind me was like, "those pictures looked really good. whenever you took one i would look at the screen and was like 'that's good.'" it was funny. the people i was standing by were really cool. then their lead singer put his guitar down and was just laying down and then he got up slowly and like put his arms up and would like hold each pose for a few seconds. it was weeeeird.

before envy's set, the guy that liked my pictures said, "take LOTS of pictures. then you're gonna send them to me." and one of the girls he was with asked, "how are you gonna get them?" and he goes, "she's gonna send them to me. we're best friends." it was hilarious. envy's guitarist was having a lot of issues with his pedals and his guitar wasn't playing and i felt really bad because he was right in front of me and he was freaking out and rushing and trying to get things working. they finally did, and they started their set. they played really well, too. their singer was kind of scaring me and he was all over the place. the crowd got really rough during their set, so we were being shoved into the stage, which hurts really bad, but it was really fun. for army's set, we could back up a little and give them space when they came closer, but for everyone else, our faces were like right in their crotches. little awkward. their bass player was super funny, i don't really even know why. but he held the bass really high and it was asm. he looked like he was having a blast. at one point, their singer goes, "you guys standing in the back need to come up here. you paid too much to stand back there with your arms folded...you're probably just here to see that almost anyway." then at the end of their set, their singer goes, "i see you guys starting the mosh pit and i think it's fxxxing bullshit. take that somewhere else." or something along those lines and flipped them off, and everyone in the front was like cheering. and the drummer came up and was like, "you guys were great, you made the show really fun, thanks for coming out." it was cool.

next was emery. all i can say is wow. i like emery, but i had NO idea they were so good live. they put on such a good show, i was so impressed. they change between three singers, which made things really interesting. and one singer also did drums and keyboards, so they had two drummers. it was weird. and he when he got up to sing, he would dance around and swing the mic and stuff and it was cool. and when he came up close to the crowd, he would like, spread his legs and didn't have a guitar or anything, so it was really awkward. they definitely played the best, and i would love to see them again anytime.

finally, the almost. not really too much to say about their set. they pretty much just came out and played. they had been posting bulletins all week about hold on and making sure you know it for a show, and they didn't even play it. that confused me. they covered yellow by coldplay. during amazing because it is, the band stopped playing and just the crowd sang amazing grace, and it was really cool. aaron just stopped singing a couple times and just the crowd sang and it was really cool. then at some point during their set, aaron said, "jesus loves you. whether you accept it or not is your choice, but we just want to make sure you know that." and i thought that was really cool. for their encore, they went back stage for maybe thirty seconds, then came back on and played dirty and left out, which i was really happy to hear.

after the show, i saw jay and got a picture with him. then we went and talked to josh from emery; he was really cool. when we walked over to him, the singer from envy was next to him, and he was like, "how are you guys?" and i was really surprised cos i kinda thought he was a dick after his little shout out at the end of their set but he was cool. i got a picture with josh and had him sign my bag and he signed kelsey's ticket. the camera did something weird when i was trying to get my picture taken, and wasn't showing anything on the screen, and he said, "oooh your batteries died! that's embarassing." it was really funny. and i said, "no they're not, i swear. she just can't work my camera." then i grabbed it and fixed it and he was like, "oh, you were right." so i got my picture and we looked around for any other people, but didn't see anyone, so we left.
