I can sort of feel the summer signaling its end.. Rain and clouds are more frequent and the days aren't as reliably long. Though bittersweetness is made a little more sweet by the ripening of blackberries and by the promise of fall and all the comforts it brings. There's something nice about the hectic summer schedule and the need to make the most of it all, giving way to relaxed evenings in sweaters and catching up on films or books you still haven't taken in.

It's a long weekend coming up, and I don't have any plans to go anywhere, and I kind of like that. Relaxing, reading, maybe shopping, picking blackberries. Going to Stanley Park on Sunday and watching some bands.

This past weekend we got away to Long Beach, Washington for their annual kite festival, and camped at the paradoxically named Cape Disappointment State Park, which was Shangri-La as far as campgrounds go. We must have had lucky timing and snatched up a cancellation, as it was the only spot left when we reserved, and we passed through a sort of tent-ghetto of overflow camping on the way to our tree covered spot 60 seconds from the white sand beach. The kite festival itself was kind of cool. We were slightly dismayed when in the evening the wind died almost completely, and the giant colourful display disappeared out of the sky. Long Beach is a typical American coastal tourist town, charming as a bouquet of nylon flowers and teaming with fat white families. When we tired of it, which didn't take long, we headed up the peninsula in search of something more pristine. The next town up appreciated their sandy coastline in an even trashier way, driving their trucks and ATVs all over the thing. I was not a fan.
