Julian's Basketball and other things

Julian has had three games so far. The first two were on the same day, back to back. It was amusing to watch the kids play. Julian is a pretty fast runner and was nearly always the first one to the other end of the court when the ball changed hands. He does not get a chance to practice at home. He did not know to stay with the person he was guarding and he was not sure why he had his hands in the air, but he kept trying. Last Saturday during his game, he was chosen to do the tip-off and played center through most of the game. He even made a basket for his team!!! It is fun to watch him learn to play. He listens and applies what he has heard to the game. I am so impressed with him!
He has another game tomorrow and then his last game is next Saturday. My Mom came to watch the game last week, where he made the basket. Ryan was there for the first two games, and he thinks he will be there tomorrow
Last weekend I borrowed Nim's Island, the movie, from the library and Julian has watched it about 5 times already. He is very curious about geography and has even written Nim a letter so he can find out more about her. He put the letter in a milk carton and then inside a plastic bag so it could be sent across the ocean without getting wet. He is anxiously awaiting a response. This is a very exciting opportunity for me and for Julian. He wants to write to her. I plan on keeping a journal with him and writing back and forth with him. I need to borrow the books about Nim from the library so that I can respond appropriately. I also want to drop a little sand into the journal to make it more authentic. I am hoping we can go to the beach for spring break so I can pick up a few shells to "send" to him. I don't know how long he will maintain the interest in Nim's Island, but right now, it is very intense, and I want to take advantage of this fabulous opportunity to help him learn to read, write and discover his world. So far, we have talked about states, continents, seas, and islands. He is using his critical thinking skills to figure out how to get the letters safely back and forth between him and Nim. So very exciting!
