Half the Bennett Centre burned to the ground yesterday. That’s the complex that holds Camp fYrefly every year. It’s made up of an old school building from 1912 and dormitory/cafeteria building. During the year they take in field trips of grades 4-6ers to do science experiments, nature walks, etc. and they hold kids camps during the summer. People also stay there during the Folk Fest if they are from out of town, as it’s located across from the gates. It’s also right underneath the hill I live on.
I was sleeping and mom came bursting in, she said she had driven by and it was on fire so she turned around just to tell me. The really crappy timing thing is that I had my job interview with them tomorrow (today). Now I’m not sure what to do. I would imagine she’s too busy and with everything going on, who knows if this position will even exist after all this.
I’m sure they have insurance, but that doesn’t mean it will actually cover rebuilding the whole place. The school board is always pretty happy to close stuff down, especially anything non-essential, so I can’t see them being in a rush to rebuild it.
This also pushes camp into jeopardy since this is where we hold it. Actually I’ve heard they wanted to move it for a while to make it bigger so this might just be the excuse they need. The very last thing camp needs is to be any damn bigger though, they’d be fools to go in that direction.
Now I'm just trying to get a hold of this woman to find out if she still wants me to come in. I’ll just go down there anyway if I don’t hear from her, but even though the school is supposedly untouched, I can’t imagine the building is open to anyone going in.
