So kind of neat, I pretty much accidentally got a piece into an art show.
At work there was this government-funded photography project lead by an Anglican Reverend, an Advertising Creative Director and a professional photographer. It was my job to bring the youth and manage them, but they asked me to participate as well. I learned so much about photography even though I entirely didn't expect to.
I took a picture of my front lawn after a lesson on light. It was a great project, two months worth. It's been great because the ones who really put work into it now get a cheque and can tell people that they're in a gallery. It's really healthy for them. And the Reverend was so interesting, literally the first church figure I've ever actually liked. The church, Holy Trinity, is just gorgeous. And warm. It was strange, I felt so welcome in that space, where normally places of worship are entirely off-putting to me. I loved it.
Anyway, our work somehow landed in Next Fest, which I did not expect. And I didn’t think mine would get submitted. But out of 5000 photos for the project, I was one of 16 chosen. And then, I landed as the representation for our group for the website and the printed guide!
It’s under ‘Lift’ here:
