/hard to be soft, tough to be tender/ (new Metric!)

I’m apparently a little late on this and maybe it’s old news to those of you who listen to music on the radio instead of just CBC like I do these days, but here’s the new Metric single:
Help I'm Alive: www.mediafire.com/?yyoqimjzvmi

I’m always really scared before a new Metric album comes out because I’m worried they might be going off into some bizarre new direction. One only needs to look at Emily Haines’ mellow piano ballads, Bang Lime’sheavy rock, old Metric’s acoustic rock, Haines’ old acoustic folk or Broken Social Scene’s little bit of everything to know that Emily and Co. are capable of a lot of different things. One day Metric will go in a scary direction.

Today is not that day. The new single is a fantastic combination of all the albums past. Rock with electronic influence that doesn’t get lost in technological artifice. If this reflects the upcoming album, I am ecstatic.

There’s a piano version and chat with Emily in Buenos Aires on the official site: www.ilovemetric.com

The album is due out in early 09 and is rumoured to include 9 tracks. There’s even supposed to be a tribute track to Freddie Mercury called Black Sheep.

If you missed this acoustic video of new song Gimme Sympathy, check it out:

Apparently Edmonton’s Sonic was the first station to get the track. Weird. If only they played Metric and T n S all the time, I’d listen to them more.

Metric are coming to town in a couple weeks for Jingle Bell Rock, which they are now calling the "Help, I'm Alive" tour. I had decided not to go because I don’t like the three opening bands and it’s at the Shaw. I hate the Shaw. I saw them there once and it was my least favourite of all their shows. Ookfest was bad too, but at least Emily pissing off the audience was hilarious.

Anyway, is anyone going to Jingle Bell Rock? I might go with.

I tremble
They’re gonna eat me alive
If I stumble
They’re gonna eat me alive
Can you hear my heart beating like a hammer, beating like a hammer

Help, I’m alive, my heart keeps beating like a hammer
Hard to be soft, tough to be tender
Come take my pulse, the pace is on a runaway train
Help, I’m alive, my heart keeps beating like a hammer, beating like a hammer

If you’re still alive
My regrets are few
If my life is mine,
What shouldn’t I do?
I get wherever I’m going
I get whatever I need
While my blood’s still flowing
And my heart still
Beating like a hammer
Beating like a hammer

Help, I’m alive, my heart keeps beating like a hammer
Hard to be soft, tough to be tender
Come take my pulse, the pace is on a runaway train
Help, I’m alive, my heart keeps beating like a hammer, beating like a hammer

If you’re still alive
My regrets are few
If my life is mine,
What shouldn’t I do?
I get wherever I’m going
I get whatever I need
While my blood’s still flowing
And my heart still
Beating like a hammer
Beating like a hammer
Beating like a hammer
Beating like a hammer

Help, I’m alive, my heart keeps beating like a hammer.
