I've spent Friday through today at
RoundCon, a gaming convention in Columbia, SC. Well, it used to be a gaming convention. In this, its 25th year, they've added an anime component as well, so now it is a gaming & anime convention. For a smaller con, it was rather fun. This weekend, I:
- Participated in a boffer sword tournament, and made it to the second round (a young lady in a Sailor Moon costume won).
- Played Settlers of Catan.
- Played a parlor game called Dixit, in which you try to race bunnies around a track by trying to get people to guess which bit of abstract art you're describing (but you get no points if everyone gets it).
- Played Fiasco, in a Western setting, and my corrupt sheriff made out like a bandit in the end.
- Watched the convention's first-ever costume contest.
- Attended a nerdcore rap concert by an artist called Tailirine Irene, who was performing at her first convention gig.
- Bought a bunch of stuff, like Fudge, Harn, an old WEG d6 Star Wars RPG adventure I didn't have yet, some CDs, Pirate Fluxx, pizza dice, and Fudge dice.
This convention is closer to my home than Dragon*Con or GAFilk, and is pretty affordable. It's smaller, but what that usually meant was that you could always find an open seat at one of the gaming tables if you wanted to play. Next year, I plan on going to Comic-Con, but I could see myself settling into a steady diet of RoundCon attendance in future years.
