The unveiling

I started pacing.
Dear Hyne, I don't pace. Squall paces. (No offense Squall)
Determined not to go outside and once again see my failure, I went to the library. It and the Training Center used to calm me down, but the Training Center is monster-free.
Soo... that leaves library.

I stayed there for hours, fingering old titles I'd read, looking for new ones..
Not really expecting to find one.

"The Aegis" it was called.
The tome seemed old, a large volume with a black cover.
The pages were gold-edged, and so I decided to open the book and see what was inside...

Nothing.

I checked it out, and had no problems.

Taking it back to my room, I opened the cover once again.
The pages fell as I lifted them, lifeless.
But then something caught my eye.
Almost like Fire on a page. I shut the book, hoping to smother the flame.
I opened it again after a moment, feeling silly.

The page looked as if it had been burned, a dark smudge in the middle.
I touched it- nothing happened.
Then fire raced across the page again, smoothly flowing across the page, writing a word.
"Eldaris"

I mouthed the word, not daring to say it.
The the word disappeared, not leaving anything on the page.
"What..?"
I touched the page. It was actually cold.

Hyne.. what is this?!?

I slid my finger along the pages, surprising myself when pain sliced across my finger.
"Ow, oh no.." I moaned when a small dot of blood made its presence known on the side of the supposedly-ancient volume.

It froze, in my hands.
I yelped in surprise and dropped it. The instant it left my hands, its state returned to normal, unphased.
"What?"
I raised my head to the ceiling, being rhetorical, and I said, "Hyne, what is this?!"

The book slammed open, its cover slamming against the floor, a sound much like a gunshot.
I jumped. This is getting strange..

My room got cold. Extremely cold. Glass objects froze, and prints of ice danced across their surfaces. I felt nothing, but my breath made clouds when I exhaled.

A voice filled my mind, icy, like Shiva's.
"Arkias..." the voice said, almost ghostlike.

And the world became darkness, as I fell to the floor.

((Open to Squall))
