Hello BBB! It's been a ridiculously busy couple of days for me with cakes (two in two days!), and I wanted to share them with you guys!
Not the best lighting but this is a giant iphone I made for someone's 18th birthday. The cake is mud cake and I got the birthday girl's mum to bake it for me (she used to be my manager at a supermarket bakery but moved to a different store - we do giant mud slabs to order and since they wanted it for 50 people I told her it would be much easier to do it that way), so this one was all just decoration. It's a double layer with chocolate buttercream filling.
Here it is from the side! I did ALL the various buttons on the sides, top and bottom (I used silver dust to make them stand out) and the birthday girl wanted a sparkly purple case. The apps took so long to do, and they were absolutely tiny.
My Mum loves patchworking and has made heaps of quilts for everyone... so for her birthday I wanted to make her a patchwork cake! I asked my auntie (who shares this hobby) what Mum's favourite kind of pattern was and she told me it was called churn dash. I googled it, went "hey, that's just squares and rectangles - I have cutters for that!" and started figuring out what colours I wanted to use.
Some of the pieces were done on a silicone embossing mat (autumn leaf pattern) and some had chocolate transfer sheets ironed onto them to look like material. The fondant buttons were added to the board to make it look less bare.
Here it is after I'd gotten five blocks done. I wasn't very careful when putting the underneath fondant layer on because I knew it would all be covered with patchwork eventually!
Mum insisted on a photo of me with the cake so she could show it off to all her friends... I pointed out she should have done that BEFORE cutting the cake!
