City of Sun and Darkness: 641 words
BEGINNING LINE: But locating Pran was more difficult than she thought, she discovered after fifteen minutes on the phone with SDSU. They were a lot more concerned with his privacy than with her need to make contact with a fellow hunter.
SNIPPET: (Warning: Shannon's grandfather says some icky things.)
"Francesca sends her BESTWISHES," Shannon said.
"I will call her. Have you spoken to Father Hobson?"
She hadn't been looking forward to this. "We didn't get along."
"Why not? Shannon, what did you do to offend him?"
"Nothing. I was as polite as humanly possible."
"Shannon, would it kill you, just once, to take Communion for the sake of the mission?"
She took a deep breath and concentrated on letting it out slowly.
"Shannon?"
"If I had, and he'd found out later that I'm Jewish, he would be even more offended."
"He would have no reason to find out."
"I'm not going to hide who I am."
"I'm not asking you to hide it. Just be discreet."
She wasn't going to throw the phone against the far window, or get out and stomp on it. "I made the best choice I could based on the circumstances." She was surprised how steady her voice was; her hands were shaking. "Maybe if you talk to Father Hobson, he'll be willing to give me another chance. If not, he can give you the information."
"Perhaps I should send someone else - someone who is less likely to give offense."
"I've already met with Arnot. Having to repeat what he said to someone else will just upset him, and shake our confidence in him."
"Very well," her grandfather said. "I will talk to Father Hobson and apologize for your behavior. I hope you will be less selfish in the future.
That was it. Assignment or no, she wasn't going to let him talk to her like that. She drew a breath to tell him so, but found herself on the line with only empty air.

The reason this was an emotional bran muffin is that I've had the same conversation, except with being queer under discussion. Except that Shannon handled it with a lot more self-control than I did. But then, being raised around her family's particular brand of dysfunctional, she's had a lot of practice.
I posted my words early because I'm going to see Jedi Elvis at the House of Blues with J&J. I suspect I'll be turning into a pumpkin tonight. :D
