Eternal Summer: 536 words
BEGINNING LINE: She dragged the garbage can out, wrinkling her nose again at the smell. It was overflowing with boxes of pizza, cans of beer and Diet Coke, and bottles of Maker’s Mark whiskey. She pulled out the bag and put a fresh one in, then took another fresh bag to empty out the fridge. Once she’d eliminated everything that smelled bad, had things growing in it, or was past its expiration date, she was left with nothing but more beer and Diet Coke, and a couple of leftover cartons of Chinese food.
FAVORITE LINE: Summer didn’t think that Audra had all that many wits to be scared out of, but she knew better than to say it. “I took the trash out. She must have just missed me.” Or been too drunk to notice when she’d passed, judging by the smell of alcohol on her breath.
ENDING LINE: “No, Daddy. I -- “ love you, she’d been about to say, when the line went dead. Again. Poor kid.
