Having never lived in an area with a high probability for fires, the last week has been a bit of a learning experience. It's been interesting watching the news and learning how to read the fire charts on line. The size of some these have been HUGE, spanning hundreds of acres. There was one around 30 miles south of me that sounds like it was contained, and one about 5 miles north on the other side of Mt. Baldy. There was some ash coming down a few nights ago and it was so smokey that you could barely see the mountains, but it had cleared up by 10:30 last night.
The fires are apparently really bad in San Diego and Malibu, and there have been some commuter students who have been unable to make it to school because they had to evacuate their homes or are opening up to friends and family who had to evacuate. The situation has been deemed a State of Emergency, and the goven-ator and the pres have stopped by to check things out.
On a personal note, things are going pretty well. I have an intern-ship at a church in Alhambra this year, with a predominately Japanese/J-American/Caucasian congregation. There is also an Indian congregation and a Vietnamese congregation. I have been starting up a kids choir, and our first performance will be November 18. Those who know of my aversion to elementary music, feel free to laugh at the irony of this turn of events.
Was planning to come home for around 3 weeks in Dec, but that's up in the air now. My manager and friend Erin is planning to leave around Dec, possibly to manage the Cokesbury in KC. If that happens, and our regional manager doesn't find someone to replace her, it means that little ol' me will more than likely get to play the manager game. . . Joy . . .
Well, that's it for now. Internet in the apartment has been on the fritz, but will try to keep ya;ll updated.
