If I won the lottery (or money was no object)

If money were no object or I won the lottery......

I would buy a smallholding with some land and a stream which is deep enough to swim in when its warm enough during the summer. I would want to stay pretty much where I am now as I love living in this area of the UK and have loads of friends here. On my smallholding I would work on becoming carbon neutral or even an energy producer by setting up small-scale renewable energy schemes (hydro-electric, wind turbine, solar heating, ground source heat pump).

I would own chickens and possibly sheep and more border collies (have two already) and I would grow my own vegetables. I would carry on working, but only for half the year which would give me the opportunity to work on becoming more energy efficient on the smallholding.

I would travel, but not by plane because of the environmental damage done by the emission of CO2. I would love to travel across Europe and Asia by train and as money is no object, I would book first class sleepers and always stay in the best hotels or holiday apartments in the places I visited. As I don't fly, even now I have got to the point where the journey to somewhere is as much part of the holiday as the place itself. Its always an adventure and you got to see such amazing things that you would otherwise fly over in a matter of seconds. To do this with unlimited time and money would be amazing.

I would spend a lot of time in southern Spain where I carried out my PhD research and would take up where I left off looking at the landscape ecology of the area.

I would give money to environmental charities and set up a research fund into large scale solar power production as an alternative to fossil fuel use.

What would you do?

dreams, environment
