I don't like The Eye very much, but they seem to have got this report right at least. Plans to sell off Forestry Commission land in England are likely to cost way more than they raise, and not just in the long term. An example given is a piece of forestry sold to an investor for £60000 who then claimed £55000 *a year* in grants and subsidies. ( Read more... )

This is a great graph - shows that the Icelandic volcano is currently emitting 0.2% of the CO2 that the European aviation industry emits on a daily basis. The planet is trying to put things back into balance GO VOLCANOES!!!

Cumbria is underwater

The unprecedented amount of rainfall yesterday (370mm 12-14") which is now being declared as the most extreme rainfall conditions ever seen in a UK context has devastated a lot of Cumbria. The floods are now seen as being a 1-in-1000 year event.

TOO MUCH RAIN!!!!

The rivers are up, Cumbria is cut off and it's a complete nightmare. The river has appeared at the end of our road, it's still raining and I just hope that it doesn't get any higher....

As I was coming home from town today, I saw a female Sparrowhawk plucking, dismembering and eating a pigeon on the grass outside the police station. It was fantastic to be able to get up really close and see this, and the bird was totally unfazed by the group of people who had gathered round to watch her eat her dinner. I have just watched Obama's speech on the BBC website and then watched the 10 o'Clock news and have been moved to tears by the man's humility, articulateness and just sheer presence as a power.  I am just amazed at the fact that this man is going to be the US President, that finally there is someone in power who will be able to meet the challenges ( Read more... )
